A few years ago, I upgraded my home WiFi system to the eero Pro 6. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I work from home, and unreliable WiFi was driving me crazy. Eero, on the other hand, delivers lightning-fast speeds that almost never have any hiccups.

It was rather expensive at the time since a 3-pack of eero Pro 6 routers cost $600. Amazon’s retail price has since fallen to $399.99, but that’s still quite a bit of money to spend on a mesh wireless system.

Thankfully, Amazon is offering two terrific deals on comparable eero setups.

First, the eero mesh WiFi system is on sale for $44.99 per router. Normally priced at $70 each, this model supports data speeds of up to 550Mbps. That’s more than fast enough for most households, even if you have four or five people in your family.

For those of you with a very large family, or if you’ve got multiple gamers in your household, there are even faster options. Eero 6+ mesh WiFi routers are down to $89.99 for Prime members. They normally cost $140 each, and they support gigabit data speeds.

Also, you can pick up the eero 6+ three-router system for $194.99, down from $300.

Last but certainly not least, Amazon is offering deep discounts on its top-of-the-line eero system.

You can currently save up to $110 on an eero Pro 6E three-router mesh WiFi system. That drops it to $399.99 instead of $550, and it’s enough to cover 6,000 sq. ft. in blazing-fast 2.3Gbps WiFi. You’ll also find discounts on the single router and two-router versions.

iFixit teardown of the M3 MacBook Pro

This week, Apple started selling the new M3 MacBook Pro models. Praised by the new processor and a space black option, these laptops have a revamped GPU. While users buying the entry-level model will discover several new features compared to the previous 13-inch MacBook Pro, the real changes are available in the M3 Max processor, which BGR got a chance to test for our M3 MacBook Pro review.

Even though the new M3 MacBook Pro models are some of the best options in the market, repairability is still a major concern. To see if Apple has made any changes to this laptop, iFixit made its famous teardown so we could see these new machines from the inside.

To start, iFixit praises that the “unpopular and unrepairable” Touch Bar has been gone. But despite the modular design of these machines’ internals, the company still says it’s very hard to repair the new M3 MacBook Pro.

For example, if you choose 8GB of RAM for the M3 MacBook Pro, you won’t be able to upgrade the memory later. The same is worth it for storage. If you choose 512GB, you can’t upgrade it if you need more.

Although some influencers claimed that 8GB of RAM is enough for most users, it’s important to note that Apple does RAM swapping, which uses a part of the SSD as extra memory. Over time, this will ruin your SSD, as it can only be rewritten a certain amount of times.

In addition, iFixit shows that it’s impossible to repair the screen, Touch ID, and lid sensor without the customers going to Apple’s own support. If they choose to repair these parts on their own, they’ll just stop working. Regarding the screen, there’s a weird issue in the top right corner that iFixit says won’t go away if Apple doesn’t repair the display itself.

With that in mind, iFixit gives the M3 MacBook Pro a 4/10 provisional score.

14-Inch M3 Max MacBook Pro Display

The $1,599 M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch is Apple’s cheapest MacBook Pro option, featuring a base configuration that includes 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. That’s probably enough for people who are choosing between the 15-inch MacBook Air and the base M3 MacBook Pro. The M3 packs a big performance bump, and the 14-inch model features excellent battery life, a better screen, and several extra ports.

But professionals who routinely use MacBook Pros to increase their productivity will probably want to get more RAM out of the gate. As you’ll see in the following video comparison, 8GB of RAM will turn out to be a big bottleneck when it comes to multitasking — regardless of what Apple says.

Apple has already addressed criticism about its decision to pair the base M3 chip with 8GB of RAM instead of 16GB. The company told a blogger that 8GB RAM on the M3 MacBook Pro is the equivalent of 16GB of memory on a PC. That’s more proof of Apple’s great marketing skills, though I am sure the company isn’t throwing out claims it can’t back up.

Even so, that 8GB of RAM on the cheapest M3 MacBook Pro can only do so much. YouTuber Max Tech compared the 8GB and 16GB versions of the base M3 MacBook Pro using multitasking experiments instead of benchmark tests.

8GB M3 MacBook Pro exporting 50 images under various conditions.

In one instance, the YouTuber used Lightroom Classic to export 50 42-megapixel images on both machines and looked at which version did it faster. That wasn’t the only thing happening on the laptops. The MacBook Pros were also running 5 or 20 tabs inside the browser while exporting those photos.

As you can see above, the 8GB model was really pushed to its limits. When handling 20 tabs and the export, the Mac needed more than 5 minutes to do the job. The 16GB M3 MacBook Pro exported the same photos in just over a minute, regardless of the number of open tabs.

Exporting 50 photos with 20 browser tabs open is over 4 times faster on the 16GB M3 MacBook Pro.

Interestingly, the performance of the 16GB M3 MacBook Pro was on par with the 16GB M2 Pro MacBook Pro.

The video, available at the end of this post, shows other multitasking examples. The conclusions are all the same: 8GB of RAM might not be enough.

The workflows the YouTuber shows off won’t fit every MacBook Pro buyer’s way of doing things. But most people have plenty of tabs open in a browser while they operate other apps, including Adobe’s photo editing tools, video editing software, chat apps, and who knows what else.

16GB M3 MacBook Pro matches the performance of the 16GB M2 Pro MacBook Pro in this test.
16GB M3 MacBook Pro matches the performance of the 16GB M2 Pro MacBook Pro in this test. Image source: Max Tech

The point here is that you’ll need to think carefully about your current and future needs. The 8GB M3 MacBook Pro can still be a great tool for a professional whose needs aren’t too demanding. Or someone who doesn’t mind being slowed down. Because if you don’t want to pay more money for the RAM upgrade, you’ll have to accept that more intensive tasks will take longer.

The 16GB RAM upgrade will cost you $200 extra, and you have to do it when you order the laptop. MacBooks do not let you upgrade the RAM or storage after the fact. But, at $1,799, the 16GB M3 MacBook Pro is approaching the price of the $1,999 M3 Pro MacBook Pro. And that chip model has a default 18GB (not a typo) of RAM.

If you’re still choosing your M3 MacBook Pro model, I’ll remind you of two other key details about the new laptops. First of all, the 14-inch M3 Max models support High Power Mode. Secondly, the 16-inch models support fast charging via USB-C, not just MagSafe.

Finally, be sure to check our M3 Max MacBook Pro 14-inch review. The M3 Max versions will begin shipping later this month.

A17 Pro and M3 chips GPU performance

Over the past few months, Apple has discussed the A17 Pro and the M3 chips, made using a new 3nm technology process. These processors offer a revamped GPU as the company bets on hardware ray-tracing and new features for its Macs, such as mesh shading and Dynamic Caching.

On its Developers’ page, Cupertino published a 30-minute-long video detailing every part of the new M3 and A17 Pro chips and how developers can take advantage of this new GPU. This material comes after BGR published its review of the M3 Max MacBook Pro, which continues to impress us year after year.

In the video, Jedd Haberstro, GPU, Graphics, and Displays Software engineer, explains how Dynamic Caching, the next-generation shader core, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading of Apple family 9 GPUs can improve the performance of developer’s Metal apps and games.

In one of the examples, Haberstro shows an M2 Max and an M3 Max MacBook Pro running Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s possible to see significant performance improvements thanks to the next-generation shader core’s ability to run the game’s Metal shaders with higher thread occupancy. Hardware ray-tracing is also an important update to the look of this game.

The engineer shows several examples of how Apple improved GPU, especially with the powerful M3 Max. With up to 128GB of RAM and a 16-core CPU (12 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), it is up to 80% faster than M1 Max and up to 50% faster than M2 Max. It has a 40-core GPU, up to 50% faster than M1 Max and 20% faster than M2 Max.

If you are curious to discover everything related to Apple’s A17 Pro and M3 chips GPU, you can find the developer’s video here. To learn more about how the new M3 Max MacBook Pro performs in real life, you can discover BGR’s review below.

M3 MacBook Pro interview with Apple exec

Apple math is something we should always keep an eye on. It’s true that owning the hardware and software can do wonders for your product, as the iPhone mostly had half the RAM of other premium Android smartphones but always performed better.

With the release of the M3 MacBook Pro, many users got excited about the upgrades compared to the previous 13-inch model, which includes the new industrial design, a miniLED display, ProMotion, several new ports, MagSafe support, and more. But for those willing to pay as little as $1,599, they will get a machine with an entry-level M3 chip, 8GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage.

Although storage is fine for regular usage, 8GB of RAM, in the long run, is not. But the issue isn’t offering 8GB of RAM in a laptop but marketing a “pro” MacBook with this bit of memory.

In an interview with Chinese content creator Lin YilYi (via MacRumors), Apple’s VP of worldwide product marketing, Bob Borchers, responded to this criticism – and his reply amazed me:

“Comparing our memory to other system’s memory actually isn’t equivalent because of the fact that we have such an efficient use of memory, we use memory compression, and we have a unified memory architecture. Actually, 8GB on an M3 MacBook Pro is probably analogous to 16GB on other systems. We just happen to be able to use it much more efficiently. And so what I would say is I would have people come in and try what they want to do on their systems, and they will, I think, see incredible performance. If you look at the raw data and capabilities of these systems, it really is phenomenal (…). People need to look beyond the specifications and actually go and understand how that technology is being used. That’s the true test.”

Although I agree there’s more to a computer than specs, Apple cautiously uses benchmarks in its favor when it’s worth it, and when it could become a criticism, it calls this measure “toxic.”

I’m sure the M3 MacBook Pro is pretty capable with 8GB of RAM; it’s just contradictory to call a laptop “pro” with only this little memory. Regular users will be pretty satisfied with this machine, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is planning to do some real work on it.

BGR has reviewed the M3 Max MacBook Pro, and you can read our thoughts below.

Apple unveiled the M3 MacBook Pro and iMac models last week, opening online preorders. The M3 MacBook Pro, M3 Pro MacBook Pro, and M3 iMac models are already shipping, with the M3 Max MacBook Pro versions having a slightly delayed release date. They’re coming later this month, so you won’t have too long to wait.

Whether you purchased your new M3 MacBook Pro flavor or not, you should be aware of two great tricks. They’ll help you decide what M3 MacBook Pro version to buy next if you didn’t get one. Or maybe replace the one you got with a different version.

The 14-inch version now supports the High Power Mode that was exclusive to the 16-inch MacBook Pro in previous generations. As for the 16-inch M3 flavors, they can recharge at 140W over USB-C and MagSafe.

As a reminder, the late 2023 MacBook Pro comes in two screen sizes. The 13-inch version is gone, so you can choose between the 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro models. When it comes to System-on-Chip (SoC) choices, you have three options: M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max.

In total, you end up with five different new M3 MacBook Pro versions. The cheapest model only comes in a 14-inch flavor, the $1,599 M3 MacBook Pro.

High Power Mode on M3 Max MacBook Pros

The M3 chips bring big performance gains across the board, with the M3 Max delivering the best upgrade for the MacBook Pro. We’re looking at M2 Ultra desktop performance in a laptop, according to benchmark results.

If you somehow need more power, the M3 Max models will support High Power Mode. As SixColors points out, the mode is available for both the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch laptop. Expect the laptop’s fans to kick into high gear when you enable the mode:

For some tests, I switched the MacBook Pro into High Power Mode, which is now available on both 14- and 16-inch models in the M3 Max configuration. (Previously, it was only available on 16-inch models.) I didn’t actually find it made much of a difference in the tests I was running, but it sure did make the fans kick in at a very loud volume.

Adding support for High Power Mode to the smaller MacBook means you no longer need to buy the larger, slightly bulkier, 16-inch version to use the feature.

Fast battery charging without MagSafe

The M3 MacBooks support fast battery charging if you use the USB-C-to-MagSafe cable that comes in the box. That’s something previous models also offered. Like all MacBooks with USB-C ports, you can recharge the laptop using a regular USB-C-to-USB-C cable. Just as you would have done it before Apple brought back MagSafe charging to the MacBook.

Apple updated its support document for MacBook battery charging. Apple explains that you can fast-charge the late 2023 MacBook Pro 16-inch model at 140W speeds by using the MagSafe 3 cable or a 240W USB-C Charge Cable (2m).

Previous 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M-series chips also support 140W charging over MagSafe. But USB-C charging is capped at 100W.

That also means the late 2023 MacBook Pro 14-inch models can fast-charge using USB-C as long as you get a charger that supports at least 100W of power. The smaller laptops will ship with chargers that offer around 70W of power.

As we’ve already seen in M3 MacBook Pro battery life tests, the new laptops will offer amazing battery life. That means you’ll hardly need to fast-charge your laptop before leaving the house or the office. However, in case you do need to reach a 50% charge in around 30 minutes, you’ll want to ensure you always pack the right charger and cable combination.

Some M3 MacBook Pro and iMac users have been reporting that their new machines are unable to update to macOS Sonoma over the air. The M3-powered machines are apparently running an unreleased version of macOS Ventura 13.5. As a result, when users try to update, they see a message indicating their “Mac is up to date.”

At this point, it remains unclear how widespread the issue is. Notably, some M3 MacBook Pro and iMacs are shipping with macOS Sonoma. Still, many users experiencing the issue have taken to Twitter and online message boards to voice their frustration. Updating via the App Store also appears to be a dead-end, with users being greeted with a message that reads: “The requested version of macOS is not available. Please check if your Mac is compatible with this software,”

Interestingly, macOS Ventura 13.5 was initially released back in July. Since then, Apple has released several software updates. In light of that, MacRumors opines that Apple likely “began stockpiling the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip several months ago.”

If you’re keen on updating to macOS Sonoma as quickly as you can, there is a workaround worth exploring. You can make use of Apple’s Install Assistant package and update to macOS Sonoma manually. The download link for that is located here.

On a related note, it’s unfortunate that Apple didn’t bump up the entry-level storage on its new iMac line. As I vented a few days ago, 256GB of storage on entry-level machines is simply not enough in today’s day and age. And while solid-state drives are certainly more expensive, it’s very easy to eat into that storage given how often users today are working with 4K videos and high-res photos.

After last week’s Scary Fast event, Apple is now selling the M3 iMac and the new MacBook Pro models worldwide. While the all-in-one computer can only be found with an entry-level processor, MacBook Pro users have a wide array of options to choose from, with three different chips for the 14-inch model and two processors for the 16-inch version.

BGR was among the publications that took a closer look at the MacBook Pro with the M3 Max chip – and the results were superb. Not only does the MacBook Pro remain the best laptop available, but the new M3 Max with a revamped GPU is what the most demanding users might need on their complex video editing tasks, coding, or working with 3D modeling.

Apple was also able to improve battery on some configurations, as the 14-inch M3 and the 16-inch M3 Pro models can hold up to 22 hours without a charge while also making the standard display brighter than the predecessor, with up to 600 nits – a 20% improvement.

Despite that, MacBook Pro users will still find everything they love about this computer: three Thunderbolt ports, a faster HDMI port, and an SD card slot in addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack. Users can also conveniently charge this computer with a MagSafe cable, making this machine drop-proof.

For the M3 iMac, Apple focused on updating the processor but with the same design as the 2021 model. Cupertino claims this machine is twice as fast as its predecessor. Overall, reviewers praised this machine, although some were waiting for new Magic accessories with USB-C ports. Currently, Apple is maintaining this iMac with Lightning Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad.

Consumers can walk into their nearest Apple Store to purchase the new M3 iMac or MacBook Pro. Over the next few weeks, Apple will roll out the availability of these machines to more countries.

Even before Apple unveiled the M3 MacBook Pro models, I was curious about the battery life gains the new chips would have to offer. I was already expecting a big performance gain. It turned out that I had anticipated correctly. Apple would keep in place the 18-hour and 22-hour battery life estimates for the M3 Pro/Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

But the M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch laptop, which replaces the discontinued 13-inch model, has a 22-hour battery life estimate of its own. That puts it ahead of the M2 MacBook Air models, which get 18-hour battery life quotes from Apple. As a reminder, the M3 MacBook Air laptops won’t be out for several months.

I’ll also note that the Air and Pro battery life estimates above are for watching movies continuously. And they’re Apple’s best-case battery life scenario for the laptops.

That is all theory. But now we have real-life tests that show how well the base $1,599 M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch does in the wild when it comes to battery performance.

We’ve already reviewed the M3 Max MacBook Pro 14-inch and found the battery life to be formidable. The laptop lasts well over a day, depending on what you put it through. Our conclusion is that you don’t have to worry about battery life from the new M3 MacBook Pros:

The best thing about recent MacBook releases is by far the battery life. The battery life on the M3 Max MacBook Pro is still excellent, and it’ll easily get you through a full day of even heavier use. I have found that the battery can take a bit of a dive if you perform really graphically intense tasks, like rendering video files, but for most tasks, you’ll find that you won’t really have to worry much about the battery life.

That’s already incredible. It potentially teases great battery life for the M3 MacBook Air, though I might not wait that long to pull the trigger.

The cheapest M3 MacBook Pro might be the best choice, given what you also get for that $1,599 entry price. As a reminder, this 14-inch laptop comes with the same display as the more expensive models. And you get a lot more ports than the Air.

While I’m not worried about battery life, I know from experience that theoretical battery life is one thing, and real-life usage is another. Also, the battery degrades, so it won’t hold the same charge within three or four years. That’s why I’d like to know exactly where I’d start with a brand new M3 MacBook Pro 14-inch model.

Luckily for me, I know the folks at Tom’s Guide perform the same battery life test on any laptop, regardless of operating system:

On the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves surfing the web at 150 nits of screen brightness, the MacBook Pro M3 lasted an epic 17 hours and 25 minutes.

As you can see in the screenshot above, that’s 3 hours longer than the M2 Pro MacBook Pro 14-inch. The 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro is still a better choice, lasting one hour extra.

Anything requiring more power will drain the battery faster, of course. A 2-hour session of Hitman on Steam drains 20% of the battery life, the blog said.

Tom’s Guide also put the M3 Max MacBook Pro 16-inch through the same test. The laptop lasted for 17 hours and 11 minutes, or almost as much as the M3 14-inch version.

Interestingly, this test also shows that the M2 Max MacBook Pro 16-inch rocks much better battery life. At 18 hours and 56 minutes, that’s 1 hour and 45 minutes longer than the M3 Max variant.

As for the real-life scores of these two M3 MacBook Pro flavors, they’re both higher than Apple’s 15-hour estimate for wireless web browsing. And that’s just amazing in my book.

With the first impressions and unboxing stories of the 24-inch iMac with M3 now available, The Verge confirmed with Apple that the company isn’t planning on releasing a 27-inch iMac with Apple Silicon at all.

While that might sound like bad news, I would say otherwise, as the company only said it doesn’t plan on releasing a 27-inch iMac, but not that it isn’t working on a larger display device.

Apple PR representative Starlayne Meza confirmed the company’s plans to The Verge. The company encourages those who have been holding out hope for a larger iMac to consider the Studio Display and Mac Studio or Mac mini, which pair a 27-inch 5K screen with a separate computer, compared to the all-in-one design of the iMac.

Rumors so far say Apple has been testing monitors with 32-inch displays. Last month, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple was working on a high-end 32-inch iMac with a miniLED display for 2025. Although Kuo was wrong about the 24-inch iMac timeframe (in this story, he said Apple would release this M3 iMac in 2024), it doesn’t mean he’s wrong about the second part.

Previously, Apple has differentiated its iMacs by size and processor, with two versions of the iMac and a single Pro model. It’s unclear if this new desktop could be named Pro, although Apple could plan a computer with the Max or Ultra processors, so users can choose between an all-in-one or buying the Mac Studio/Mac Pro plus the Studio Display/Pro Display XDR.

That said, despite this upcoming larger iMac, Apple might be planning new displays. In July, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Cupertino was working on multiple new monitors, including likely successors of the 2019 Pro Display XDR and the 2022 Studio Display.

More interesting, Apple also plans to release a monitor that could be used as a smart display when the Mac is idle. Some ideas include displaying weather and calendar information – which Apple just previewed with iOS 17’s StandBy mode.

Unfortunately, Gurman doesn’t expect a new Apple monitor to land before 2024 “at the earliest,” so regular users can confidently buy the Studio Display, and professionals should wait a bit longer for a Pro Display XDR replacement.

With that in mind, Apple is indeed working on larger displays, but don’t expect them to release in 2023 or 2024. Thankfully, the good news is that these machines are coming.
