Every time I think I’m in the right place with Apple Music, Spotify fights back with a sweet redesign to one of its apps, and I get sent into another internal battle over which music streaming service to use. Today is another one of those days after seeing the redesign of Spotify’s TV app.

Today, Spotify announced that it is rolling out a major redesign to its TV app. In a blog post, the company revealed the new design, which takes a lot of inspiration from the desktop version of the music streaming app. It appears that the company wanted to update everything, considering that it has also rolled out updates to its mobile and desktop apps this year as well.

The new version of the TV app brings the experience of using Spotify on television closer to the experience on the mobile and desktop experience — especially the desktop experience. The new Home page looks almost exactly what the desktop app looks like with its shortcuts, recently played, and recommendation sections.

The company is also rolling out a new “Up Next” queue to see all of the songs that will play next, a new Dark mode to dim the screen at night, and an easier way to switch between accounts so everyone can easily play their favorite music — no matter who is using the TV.

• New Home design: We’ve redesigned the Home page, bringing the big-screen experience in line with our Mobile and Desktop apps. You can now easily find familiar shortcuts to favorites, recently played audio, and personalized recommendations right on top of the Home page.
• ‘Up next’ listening queue: Previously it was only possible for TV listeners to view the next song lined up. Now, with the newly introduced Now Playing view, you can better manage your listening session by viewing and controlling what plays next through the easily accessible queue.
• Dark mode: For those occasions where the TV is not meant to be the center of attention, simply turn on Dark mode through Now Playing view. This will dim the screen and tune down the visuals to display a minimal amount of information so you can listen and still keep the mood.
• Account switching: Since multiple people in your household probably use the TV, account switching is a key feature for TV app users. We’ve made it easier to switch accounts by always showing the active profile in the top-right corner of your screen. Changing profile accounts can be done at any time by selecting your profile image, keeping the experience tailored to your preferences and listening habits.

After checking out the announcement video, it seems that Spotify is trying to blend the long-beloved audio experience with the video one as well. Spotify has recently made a push to get video podcasts on its service, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the company highlighting video versions of podcasts — especially on the TV app. I’m sure the company would love for you to watch them there instead of on YouTube.

I’m really interested to dive into this new experience and compare it to what I currently experience with the Apple Music app on the Apple TV. Spotify says that the new TV app is starting to roll out to Free and Premium users today to “supported Smart TVs, gaming consoles, and media-streaming devices.”

I’m personally an AirPods Pro 2 user, and there are plenty of things I like about them. You can read BGR’s in-depth AirPods Pro 2 review to learn about the best and worst features of Apple’s flagship ANC earbuds.

The active noise cancellation feature is great, and the sound quality is also pretty good on AirPods Pro 2. That being said, there are some instances when I don’t necessarily like using them.

Even with Apple’s Adaptive Transparency feature, there are times when you don’t want sound isolation and would prefer open earbuds instead. On top of that, AirPods Pro 2 are quite expensive. Even on sale close to Amazon’s best price of the year, they still cost $199.99 right now at Amazon.

Apple’s 2nd-generation entry-level AirPods have all the same great integrations with Apple devices. Plus, you’ll get detailed battery information on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, which definitely comes in handy.

On top of that, they offer terrific sound quality for open earbuds. This week, House of Marley started selling its new eco-friendly Little Bird wireless earbuds in the US. Available for under $40, the company promises high-quality audio on a budget. While a few years ago, House of Marley’s Rebel earbuds didn’t impress us, it seems the company learned its lesson, and not only is it delivering great audio quality, but it was able to create a well-made product without overcharging users.

The first impression of the Little Bird true-wireless earbuds is that they look like eco-friendly AirPods Pro. Crafted from bamboo and recycled plastics, they look good, and you can choose between three different ear tips, with each size offering different colors: green, yellow, or red.

Although I’ve always used the medium size for AirPods and Beats earbuds, I find more comfortable the small option for Little Bird earbuds. The medium size isolates the surroundings better, but after an hour of listening time, they start to hurt my ears.

The charging case has a nice finish in black with the logo of House of Marley on the front and at the top. Another great addition is USB-C. Usually, for budget devices, companies tend to use micro USB, and I’m glad it’s not the case here. You can really feel its plastic finish, and since I have big hands, I find it a bit tricky to remove the earbuds for the charging case since there’s little room for movement.

Overall, it has a solid eco-friendly look – which the brand is all about – and anyone rocking these earbuds on the street would look really cool: AirPods Pro-like earbuds with woody and black finishes. This is pure style.

One thing that confused me the first time I tried these earbuds was the lack of LED indicators. You’ll find them on the earbuds, but they will always blink white, which makes me think as if they’re trying to pair with my iPhone. There’s also an LED below the case that activates with the USB-C cable on. If there were an LED in the front, it would be easier to understand if these earbuds were charging or with full battery if there were color variations.

House of Marley’s Little Bird true wireless earbuds sound good, but there are a few catches. For example, I feel I need to turn the volume way up to get a crispier sound. When it’s lower than 70%, the overall quality is flat, and I feel the sound almost disappears below 50%. Compared to AirPods 3 (although they are not competitors), the sound is crispy and full at 50%, and around 70%, I have the perfect experience in a quiet room.

That said, raising the volume doesn’t make Little Bird earbuds sound bad – on the contrary, they sound really good. Although it’s not very friendly for my ears, I tend to use these earbuds almost at 100%, so I can really experience my favorite tunes.

I have a preference for everything surrounding rock, pop, and indie/pop, and I think Little Bird earbuds value the singing and percussion instruments better. For bass lovers, I don’t think users will fall for this product, as they lack that heavy boom.

When I’m outdoors, I feel the medium ear tips work as noise canceling, as the fit with the song usually removes all other noises. With the small tip, I can hear the surroundings a bit better.

Mic quality

House of Marley promises and delivers clear calls. On FaceTime calls, other people talking to me had no issues with how I sounded. However, I’ve been told to speak a little louder. I wouldn’t recommend taking a call outdoors with the wind against you, but these earbuds do a decent job in a controlled environment.

Gestures, battery, and connectivity

Impressively, the Little Bird true wireless earbuds work with touch gestures. Gentle taps near the top of the stern give you a feedback sound. Here’s what you can do.

• Tap on the left side: Lower the volume
• Tap on the right side: Raise the volume
• Double tap: Play/pause
• Long press the left side: Play the previous track
• Long press the right side: Play the next track
• Triple tap: Activates Game/Movie mode

Similar to Beats Studio Pro, House of Marley offers different profile modes. When you triple-tap the earbud, you can activate game or movie mode. I tried with a few TV shows, but I didn’t note the difference between having the mode on or off.

On the company’s website, House of Marley doesn’t explain much besides “enhance your audio experience with movie and gaming modes.” It’s a little trick that you might never use, but just be aware that it exists.

Regarding its battery, House of Marley promises up to 24 hours of listening time, with 6 hours of playtime without case. These are solid results, and I could spend almost a week without needing to charge these earbuds. No complaints here.

Lastly, there’s a USB-A to USB-C cable. Although it’s little, it’s nice that the company includes a resistant braided cable with this device.

House of Marley offers quick charge, Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, IPX4, and a 2-year guarantee. I think the only thing really lacking on these earbuds is an indicator of the battery status, which could come in the form of a widget or through Marley’s app, which is incompatible with this device.

House of Marley Little Bird True Wireless earbuds cost $39.99, which is a ridiculously good price for everything these earbuds offer, and are available in Signature Black or Cream. They’re not comparable with Beats or Apple earbuds, but they also cost up to 1/5 less than these premium options.

The overall sound is good; it has a great built-in quality, and the eco-friendly approach of House of Marley is always a positive point to note.

For casual listening, I think the company did an excellent job by offering USB-C capabilities, touch gestures, and different ear tips without overcharging users. It’s a fair price for fair earbuds.

In late 2021, Apple announced three new HomePod mini colors alongside the Apple Music Voice plan, which was unlike anything else Apple had offered. Half the price of a regular Apple Music subscription (at that time), it was Apple’s plan to tackle Spotify’s free tier with ads.

Unlike an individual Apple Music subscription, which gives you full access to the service, the Apple Music Voice plan could only be used with Siri. You could ask the assistant to play songs, playlists, and stations, and it only worked with Apple devices. So, if you were using Apple Music with an Android phone or on a smart TV, you couldn’t take advantage of this subscription.

This cheaper plan had other disadvantages, such as no lossless audio or Dolby Atmos support, and no Apple Music Classical. It seemed as though the plan was pretty much only for users who wanted a HomePod with a built-in music service, since people couldn’t even download songs.

The Apple Music Voice plan was released in 17 countries and regions, including the US, the UK, China, Japan, Spain, and others. But as has now been confirmed, the service didn’t have the popularity Apple would have hoped.

First and foremost, a student plan was the same price as the Voice Plan – and paying for a service and still being able to take full advantage of it is just frustrating. Over the short life of this tier, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone saying they ditch Spotify or another streaming service for Apple Music.

Even the company bringing back a second generation of the HomePod wasn’t enough to entice users to this plan. In the last few months, BGR discovered code references that Apple was planning to kill the Apple Music Voice plan, so it comes as no surprise that Apple has now discontinued this tier.

With a lack of features or reasons to update, at least Cupertino should focus on convincing users that Apple One is where they should spend their money, as they can get all Apple subscriptions in one place and pay less.

Especially now that the company has decided to raise the prices of some of its services – and several other companies are doing the same – a tier without real benefits shouldn’t exist.

At least the iOS 17 cycle brings several features to Apple Music users.
