Apple is expected to announce a new iPad Pro in 2024. After a mild M2 update in late 2022, rumors indicate a significant refresh coming to Apple's high-end tablets early next year. Here's everything we know about it.

Design: Apple embraces OLED displays

Apple iPad Pro Display

After differentiating both iPad Pro models by their display (LCD for the 11-inch model and miniLED for the 12.9-inch version), Apple is said to see the same panel technology for the different screen sizes.

Actually, of all the rumors, this is the one we have heard the most about during the lifecycle of the 2022 iPad Pro. In October last year, DSCC's Ross Young predicted that both iPad Pro models would have an OLED display in 2024.

According to him, Apple is making this switch because "costs are falling," OLED performance is improving thanks to tandem stacks and phosphorescent blue emitters. Besides Young, many other analysts reinforced that OLED is coming to the new iPad, such as The Elec, Omdia, Bloomberg, and more.

Recently, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, said Apple is increasing the display size of the larger iPad Pro from 12.9 inches to 13-inches. Besides that, it's unclear if Apple will change the aluminum finish of this tablet or if it will have any other design change.

Front facing camera should have a new spot

iPad 10

With the tenth-generation iPad, Apple switched the front-facing camera from the top to the center of its right side. This change improves how users appear on a video call, as people have been using the iPad more in horizontal mode rather than vertical.

If Apple changes the 2024 iPad Pro, video calls will look more natural when the iPad is connected to the Magic Keyboard; also, Center Stage is still expected to be a feature of this new tablet.

At the moment, it's unclear if Apple will improve the TrueDepth system on the new iPad Pro or if it will have the same specs as the 2022 model.

Color options

Since Apple redesigned the iPad Pro in 2018, it has offered both Space Gray and Silver models, just like the high-end MacBook Pro. In previous years, Apple has also provided this iPad in gold and rose gold options, but it's unclear if this high-end model could offer more colors again.

At the moment, it seems that "fun" colors will be prioritized in other iPad lines, such as the base and Air versions.

The M3 chip should power the 2024 iPad Pro

iPad Pro M2

Since Apple finished introducing the latest M2 chips with the Mac Pro and Mac Studio during the WWDC 2023 keynote, we focus on the M3 processor, which could have the first batch of products announced later in October.

At the moment, it's expected that this processor will power the 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, an entry-level Mac mini, and a new iteration of the 24-inch iMac. Unlike the M2 processor, the M3 should have a more impressive spec bump, as it's expected to feature a new 3nm technology process.

If that turns out to be accurate, the M3 chip could once again raise the bar of how fast "entry-level" processors should be. In addition, if Apple follows the trend, the 2024 iPad Pro will likely have this chip, making the new iPad even more powerful than it currently is.

At the moment, it's unclear if Apple could add 16GB of RAM for more storage options or if it's planning to switch the current storage options available. At the moment, here are the specs of the high-end iPad:

  • 128GB with 8GB of RAM
  • 256GB with 8GB of RAM
  • 512GB with 8GB of RAM
  • 1TB with 16GB of RAM
  • 2TB with 16GB of RAM

Will there be camera upgrades to the 2024 iPad Pro?

Apple iPad Pro CameraImage source: Christian de Looper for BGR

The iPad Pro usually has cameras on pair with the latest iPhone releases. If Apple follows the trend, these are a few improvements we could see with the upcoming iPad:

  • A 48MP main camera
  • Ultra Wide lens with 12MP
  • Smart HDR 4 + Photonigh Engine
  • Cinematic Mode with new recording options
  • Action Mode
  • Autofocus on the front-facing camera

In addition, Apple could add Spatial Video support, as the new iPhone 15 Pro also has it. This feature lets users capture videos with depth, which could be later shown on Apple Vision Pro.

Another function Apple could bring to this tablet is log-encoded video support, another feature of the latest iPhone release.

Accessories

Apple might be planning to revamp both of iPad Pro's accessories:

Magic Keyboard is getting a revamp

Apple iPad Pro Keyboard

Apple iPad Pro Keyboard. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR

In a Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman said Apple is redesigning the Magic Keyboard. "The new accessory makes the iPad Pro look even more like a laptop than the current setup and adds a larger trackpad."

Currently, Magic Keyboard users complain it's bulkier and drains the iPad's battery really fast. In addition, its extra USB-C port has slow tech compared to the iPad Pro's Thunderbolt port. Since this accessory is expensive, we hope Apple makes it lighter and less power-consuming.

In addition, a larger trackpad could help users navigate through the system. At the moment, it's unclear if a new Apple Pencil is in the works.

Apple Pencil 3 with interchangeable tips

According to X leaker Majin Bu, Apple is readying the Apple Pencil 3 with interchangeable magnetic tips. They say Cupertino will bet on a tip for drawing, one for technical drawing, and one for painting.

It's unclear if this accessory will solve an issue where the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil drains the battery of the iPad Pro when placed on it, but interestingly, Apple might be planning to update this five-year-old accessory.

In October, Cupertino unveiled a USB-C Apple Pencil. It's not as good as the 2nd-gen model, but it doesn't mean Apple isn't planning a new model for this upcoming iPad.

iPadOS 17 will power the 2024 iPad Pro

Interactive widgets on iPad via iPadOS 17.

iPadOS 17 will power the upcoming iPad Pro. Even though there are a few new features, this operating system doesn't unlock the true potential of this hardware. Here are the critical points of this system:

  • New Lock Screen: iPadOS 17's new Lock Screen resembles the one available for iOS 16. It also introduces Live Activities support and adds widgets to this screen;
  •  Stage Manager: It offers a more flexible layout when moving and resizing windows (especially with an external display), so you can set up your workspace just how you want it. In addition, you can use the built-in camera in your external display for FaceTime and conference calls for the first time;
  • Freeform: Adds new drawing tools, such as a watercolor brush, calligraphy pen, highlighter, variable-width pen, and ruler. With Shape Recognition, users can hand draw a shape like a square and watch a perfect version snap into place.

There's so much more coming with iPadOS 17, but more multitasking features may come with the iPadOS 18 software update.

Release date

The new iPad Pro should be released in early 2024. Mark Gurman expects this device to be introduced between a spring event and WWDC.

According to a report from South Korea's Chosun Ilbo (via OLED-Info), OLED panels for this new iPad will begin mass production in February 2024, meaning this product could launch between fall and early summer.

Price

It's unclear if the new features will make the iPad Pro more expensive. Currently, Apple charges a bit more on the 12.9-inch model due to its miniLED display. Cupertino could make the 11-inch model more costly while making the 13-inch option more affordable.

These are the current prices for the 128GB iPad models:

  • The 11-inch model starts at $799
  • The 12.9-inch model starts at $1,099

That said, The Korean version of The Elec says that Apple will pay up to three times more for the OLED panel than the ones used by its competitors today.

Apple, LG Display, and Samsung Display are discussing the supply price of OLED panels for iPads scheduled to be released next year at around $270 for the 11-inch model and $350 for the 13-inch model. The supply price of OLED panels for existing IT products in the early 10-inch range is around $100-150.

The publication says Apple will pay more for the new 2024 iPad Pro OLED panel because it will introduce new processes not found in existing products, such as a two-stack tandem structure, an LTPO thin film transistor, and a hybrid OLED structure. That said, industry analysts believe supply prices are bound to rise because of this new process.

Of course, we'll only know for sure once Apple announces this new tablet. BGR will keep updating this article as we learn more about this product in the future.

Apple AirPods

AirPods are unquestionably among the most popular headphones in the world. It's great that there's so much variety in the Apple AirPods lineup, but the best model will always be the one that fits your budget and style.

This starts with the original AirPods (less expensive, launched in 2016) and AirPods Pro (more features, active noise cancelling), then extends to the AirPods Max (high-end audiophile). And if you're in the market for a pair, there are some awesome discounts and deals on the latest-generation AirPods. The star of the show is Apple's new AirPods Pro with USB-C, which are on sale at an all-time low price of $189.99!

Bonus: Don't forget our awesome overview that covers the easiest tips and tricks on how to connect AirPods to your iPhone, Mac, or other device.

The good news is that every single one of Apple's various AirPods models is on sale right now. The bad news, however, is that not every model is down to its lowest price of 2023 anymore.

Over the past few weeks, the most popular AirPods deal among our readers is Amazon's sale on 2nd-gen AirPods Pro with USB-C. These just-released earphones retail for $249, but you might be able to pick up a pair on sale for $189.99 if you catch Amazon's sale before it ends.

Of course, other models are also on sale right now.

First, we have second-generation AirPods on sale for $99. These are Apple's most affordable AirPods, so they're always top sellers. Or, if you want the upgraded model, AirPods 3 are down to just $149.99 for the model with a Lightning Charging Case instead of the MagSafe Case.

Want a MagSafe case instead? Pick up renewed AirPods 3 with MagSafe Charging Case for as little as $133. That's a very solid discount compared to Apple's $179 retail price. If you want the version with Apple's MagSafe case, this is the best price you'll find anywhere.

I remember picking up a pair of the original AirPods, and it’s pretty incredible how much better the current lineup is compared to only 5 years ago. In this extensive guide, I'll tell you about all the best deals on AirPods that I could find. Also, we recently updated our guide on the best AirPods models, so read that and come back here to shop the deals.

Apple AirPods at the lowest prices

If you want the Cliff's Notes version, here's a quick list of every AirPods model with links to the best prices:

Our favorite AirPods Pro 2 deals

Before we get to all the deep discounts and AirPods deals in this roundup, we need to cover Apple's newest model.

Apple announced AirPods Pro 2 during the big iPhone event in September. AirPods Pro 2 were released on September 23, 2022. Then, almost exactly one year later on September 22, 2023, Apple released an updated version of AirPods Pro with USB-C. The new USB-C port on the MagSafe case matches the updated port on the iPhone 15 series.

In both cases, hardcore Apple fans already knew what to expect because they leaked long before Apple unveiled them.

When comparing AirPods Pro 2 vs. AirPods, here are the key upgrades:

  • Apple H2 chip
  • 2x better active noise cancelling technology
  • New low-distortion drivers and custom amplifier
  • Volume control on stems
  • New MagSafe charging case with Find My integration and a speaker (USB-C and Lightning versions)
  • Apple Watch charger support

When you combine all those features, AirPods Pro 2 are a pretty big upgrade!

The best way to learn more is to read our in-depth AirPods Pro 2 review. There are tons of features like great noise-cancellation, Spatial Audio, seamless transfer from one device to another, and cutting-edge specs.

If you're ready to purchase a pair of AirPods Pro 2, there are plenty of options. You can buy them directly from Apple or from one of its many retail partners, including Best Buy, Amazon, Target, Walmart, and more. Apple's AirPods Pro 2 retail price is $249, which is the same as the previous model.

When you order your AirPods Pro with USB-C from Amazon instead of Apple or Best Buy, you might be able to save $59 if you can catch them on sale for $189.99. That matches the all-time low price from Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days sale in mid-October. This time, however, the deal is available to all shoppers instead of only to people who pay for Prime.

Finally, if Amazon's deal ends, you might be able to get AirPods Pro 2 on sale at Verizon for $199.99. This sale keeps coming and going, so you'll need to check below to see if AirPods Pro 2 are still on sale at Verizon right now.

The best AirPods Pro (1st Generation) deals

Apple's first-generation AirPods Pro were released in October 2019 with a starting price of $249. This model has since been discontinued following the release of AirPods Pro 2, but there is somehow still tons of inventory out there in brand-new condition.

As for AirPods Pro deals, we'll start with the cheapest option.

Amazon has a special "Renewed Premium" program where it sells refurbished products that are in mint condition. In the case of AirPods Pro, Amazon says that its Renewed AirPods Pro are guaranteed to look and perform like they're brand new. They'll also have battery health of at least 90%, according to the listing.

Finally, Amazon provides a one-year guarantee with this model, so you really have nothing to worry about.

AirPods Pro 2 retail for $249 and 1st-Gen AirPods Pro are $229 at full price. Meanwhile, you can pick up Renewed Premium AirPods Pro on sale with a deep discount. There are also regular renewed AirPods Pro on Amazon right now, but they're actually somehow more expensive than the Renewed Premium option that's in better condition and has a better warranty.

Let's dive into some of the key features that make AirPods Pro so popular.

Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking makes it feel like music is coming from all around you. This makes listening with the AirPods Pro feel like being at a live music concert.

Also, AirPods Pro were the first AirPods to include active noise cancellation and transparency mode. Active noise cancelling headphones allow you to tune out external for an immersive listening experience. And, when you need to hear and interact with what's happening around you, you can switch to transparency mode.

They also offer sweat and water resistance with three sizes of tapered silicone tips so that you can choose the best fit for your ear canal. After all, even the best active noise cancellation technology in the world would be useless without a secure fit in your ear.

Additionally, you get more than 24 hours of listening time with the MagSafe charging case.

Last but not least, Best Buy also has Certified Refurbished 1st-Gen AirPods Pro in stock for $179.99 right now. That means you have two different options to buy them with a deep discount.

If both Amazon and Best Buy run out of inventory or cancel their AirPods Pro sales, you might be able to find a pair with a slight discount at Walmart.

Great AirPods 3 deals (3rd Generation)

Apple AirPods 3 deals

Apple released the third-generation AirPods in October 2021. This latest model comes with all the features of its predecessor, plus even more functionality.

The AirPods 3 offer better sound quality than older AirPods models. This improved sound quality is a result of the Adaptive EQ feature. This automatically tunes music based on the shape of your ears. They are also IPX4 sweat and water-resistant.

These wireless earphones have better battery life than AirPods Pro, offering extended listening sessions. They also feature Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking that places sound around you. Spatial Audio is Apple's version of surround sound, similar to Dolby Atmos. The third-gen AirPods also come with a wireless charging case that can be charged using a wireless charging pad.

The AirPods 3rd-generation are a good deal for the price, and cost less than the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. However, they do not feature active noise cancelation. If that's a dealbreaker for you, there are AirPods Max and AirPods Pro deals mentioned above.

We'll note that stock keeps running out, so you may need to check back a few times in order to catch them after inventory has been replenished. Also, make sure you're aware that there are two different cases. The current deal covers the version with the Lightning Charging Case, not the MagSafe Charging Case.

Of all the AirPods models that are available right now, AirPods 3 seem to go on sale the least. At the time of this most recent update, the previous discount was no longer available.

Also of note, the model above comes with Apple's regular Lightning Charging Case. AirPods 3 with MagSafe Charging Case were out of stock at the time of this update.

If you have your heart set on 3rd-generation AirPods but you definitely don't want to pay full price, there's one other deal you can take advantage of. Renewed AirPods 3 with MagSafe Charging Case are discounted right now on Amazon.

As noted on the product page, these renewed AirPods 3 have Amazon's 90-day guarantee. If they're not fully functional and in "excellent" condition, you have 90 days to get your money back.

This should go without saying, but inventory is obviously going to be limited since Amazon can only sell as many renewed AirPods 3 models as it can get its hands on. Once they inevitably sell out, however, you can check back every so often to see if they're back in stock.

It's also important to keep your eye on 1st-gen AirPods Pro deals now that the new 2nd-gen model is out. There's a good chance you can pick up a pair for close to the same price as the AirPods 3. It really depends on what kind of features you're looking for when it comes to AirPods.

If you want to go with the best option, the AirPods Pro is a much more popular choice. You won't pay much more, thanks to all the deals out there. But you'll get better sound quality, a newer chip, active noise cancelling technology, and more. Our recommendation is to scroll back up and check out the current crop of AirPods Pro deals rather than purchasing a pair of AirPods 3.

Awesome AirPods deals (2nd Generation)

Apple AirPods

As newer models of AirPods are being released, retailers are trying to clear out second-generation AirPods from their inventory. Retailers like Amazon periodically drop prices.

AirPods 2 are not compatible with wireless charging and instead come with a regular charging case. The wireless earbuds offer great sound, excellent battery life, and a comfortable in-ear fit. Connection to your Apple devices is also relatively seamless.

Hurry, because right now AirPods 2 are back on sale with a discount. These are the only AirPods you can buy for less than $100.

If you miss that Amazon deal, you're not completely out of luck. Best Buy is currently selling Geek Squad Certified Refurbished AirPods 2 for $94.99. They look and perform like new, and they also carry Best Buy's guarantee.

That's actually more than AirPods 2 cost in brand-new condition at Amazon, however. With that in mind, I would advise our readers to skip this deal.

Best cheap AirPods Max deals and sales

Apple released the AirPods Max in December 2021. It might seem like Apple has gone a long time without updating them, but this isn't the type of product that needs an annual upgrade. Try these headphones once and you'll instantly see that they're on par with the very best wireless noise cancelling headphones from the likes of Bose and Sony.

AirPods Max are the first over-ear headphones from Apple. AirPods Max are also the most expensive headphones from Apple with a starting price of $549.

If you read our AirPods Max review, however, you'll see why they might be worth that hefty price tag for many people.

The AirPods Max headphones feature a unique design with a breathable knit mesh headband and a stainless steel frame with memory foam ear cushions for maximum comfort. Other features include active noise cancellation and up to 20 hours of battery life.

Active noise cancellation allows you to block outside noise for a more immersive listening experience. You can also activate transparency mode like other AirPods to tune into conversations around you without having to remove your headphones.

The Apple AirPods Max also offers spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, and the headphones come in various colors, including space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink.

Best of all, there are some fantastic AirPods Max deals going right now that will save you a lot of money. Even with the discount though, they're still more expensive than rival noise cancelling headphones from the likes of Bose and Sony.

Overall, the AirPods Max offer some of the highest fidelity sound and premium features for headphones. But at that price point, there are compelling alternatives if you’re not completely into the Apple ecosystem.

Another thing to note is that there are almost always discounts these days on Apple's AirPods Max. You should never even consider purchasing them at full price.

Sale prices generally range from $449.99 to $479.99, so keep that in mind when you're shopping for these premium Apple headphones. If you see them on sale for any more than that, definitely don't buy them until the price drops again.

Discounted Apple wireless charging case

Using the AirPods wireless charging case, charging is as simple as placing your AirPods in the case and laying it on a Qi-compatible charging pad.

The case has an LED indicator on the front that lets you know that your AirPods are charging, and you can charge the case using the lightning port when a charging mat is unavailable. All you need to do is to plug in a lightning cable.

You can use the charging case to recharge your earbuds multiple times when their batteries get drained while you're not at a charger. Extend your listening time even without a charging mat or power cable. The Wireless Charging Case works with AirPods (1st and 2nd generation).

What are the cheapest AirPods?

Apple's cheapest AirPods model is the 2nd-generation AirPods, often referred to as AirPods 2 or just AirPods. This is the updated version of Apple's original AirPods earbuds, and it retails for $129.

What's better, AirPods or AirPods Pro?

AirPods and upgraded AirPods Pro each have pros and cons. If you're trying to decide between them, there are a few simple things to keep in mind. If you prioritize affordability, you should get AirPods. If you want active noise cancelling and better sound quality, it's worth paying more for AirPods Pro.

Why are there cheap AirPods?

Apple is often thought of as a premium device maker, but the company does try to offer products across a wide range of price points. That's why there are cheap AirPods in addition to more expensive models, like AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

How can you get Apple AirPods for free?

Apple offers a back to school promotion each year, and sometimes it includes free AirPods when students purchase another qualifying Apple product. That's currently the only way to get free AirPods from Apple.

Do AirPods have a student discount?

Apple says that AirPods are not eligible for a student discount. There is one way to get discounted AirPods from Apple, though. The Apple store will match other retailers' discounts up to 10%. So, if you find AirPods on sale elsewhere but would prefer to buy them directly from Apple, you can save up to 10% by showing them a discount at a store like Amazon, Best Buy, or Walmart.

iPhone 15 Pro

The iPhone 15 series was announced on September 12 at Apple's Wonderlust event. Available in four options, Cupertino revamped the standard models while taking the Pro iPhones to the next level. Here's what you need to know about these new phones.

Design: The Dynamic Island welcomes more people

Regular iPhone 15 models with Dynamic IslandImage source: Apple Inc.

After ditching the classic iPhone X notch in 2022 for the iPhone 14 Pro models, Apple has expanded the new Dynamic Island cutout to all iPhone 15 versions. All four new iPhones offer this new design in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays.

For the regular models, Apple has increased its brightness to 2,000 nits outdoors – twice as much as the previous generation. The back glass is strengthened with an optimized dual-ion exchange process before being polished with nanocrystalline particles and etched to create a textured matte finish. A new contoured edge on the aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure wants to make this iPhone feel nicer in users' hands.

Apple added an ultra-thin bezel for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max while maintaining the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays. By adding a titanium design, which is the same used in spacecraft, Apple says it offers one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any metal, making this the company's lightest Pro lineup ever.

Both models feature a new brush texture and contoured edges. The Pro lineup combines the strength of titanium with the toughest back glass in a smartphone and the industry-leading Ceramic Shield on the front. Using an industry-first thermo-mechanical process, the titanium bands encase a new substructure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum, bonding these two metals with strength through solid-state diffusion. According to Apple, the aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation and allows the back glass to be easily replaced. This new design highlights the Super Retina XDR display with Always-On and ProMotion technologies for an exceptional viewing experience.

Another change with the iPhone 15 Pro models is the all-new Action button, which replaces the single-function mute switch. Users can now activate several new functions with it, such as:

  1. Accessibility: Users can access selected accessibility features with one tap;
  2. Camera: Launch the Camera app;
  3. Flashlight: Turn on or off the flashlight;
  4. Focus: Activate or deactivate a Focus Mode;
  5. Magnifier: Activate the Magnifier app to use the iPhone’s camera as a magnifying glass to zoom in on small texts;
  6. Shortcuts: Pressing the Action button lets users run any shortcut they have created. The same already happens with the Apple Watch Ultra;
  7. Silent Mode: Long press to turn silent mode on or off;
  8. Translate: Launches the Translate app and starts a conversation or the text translation with a single tap;
  9. Voice Memos: Start or stop recording a voice memo with the Voice Memos app.

New iPhone 15 colors

Apple says that color is infused throughout the back glass for the first time in a smartphone, creating five colors for the iPhone 15 models. These are the options available:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Green
  • Yellow

For the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models, Apple has ditched gold for the first time in favor of these colors:

  • Black Titanium
  • White Titanium
  • Blue Titanium
  • Natural Titanium

A16 Bionic and A17 Pro power this new generation

iPhone 15 Pro A17 Pro chipImage source: Apple Inc.

For these new iPhones, Apple is following the same strategy as the iPhone 14 lineup: adding a new chip to the Pro iPhones and using last year's processor to the base-model options.

That said, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus offer the iPhone 14 Pro's A16 Bionic chip. With two high-performance cores that use 20 percent less power and four high-efficiency cores, the 6-core CPU is faster than the previous generation and handles intensive tasks while saving battery life. The 5-core GPU has 50 percent more memory bandwidth for smooth graphics when streaming videos and playing games. A new 16-core Neural Engine is capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning computations for features like Live Voicemail transcriptions in iOS 17 and third-party app experiences — all while protecting critical privacy and security features using the Secure Enclave.

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max's A17 Pro chip is the industry's first 3-nanometer chip. The new CPU is up to 10 percent faster with microarchitectural and design improvements, and the Neural Engine is now up to 2x faster, powering features like autocorrect and Personal Voice in iOS 17. The pro-class GPU is up to 20 percent faster and unlocks entirely new experiences, featuring a new 6-core design that increases peak performance and energy efficiency. Now, hardware-accelerated ray tracing is 4x faster than software-based ray tracing. Apple even promotes new console titles for this iPhone, such as Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Overheating issues

A few weeks after the iPhone 15 Pro models were released, several users started complaining about their iPhones overheating. While in some cases, it would seem out of nowhere, people thought it could be due to the titanium frame and the A17 Pro chip.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said it was not due to the chip, and Apple confirmed that it was software-related. Here's what the company stated:

“The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity. We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”

Apple said Uber, Asphalt 9, and Instagram were among the apps responsible for overheating the iPhone, although it seems they are already working on a fix. Fortunately, it's not affecting all users. Apple said it addressed these issues with iOS 17.0.3 and iOS 17.1, but some users are still experiencing overheating.

Cameras: From iPhone 15 to iPhone 15 Pro Max

For the first time, Apple added a 48MP main lens to the standard iPhones, which helps the device absorb more light in photos. With the quad-pixel tech, the image output will still be 12 Megapixels, but they’ll be clearer and crispier. Apple uses Photonic Engine to deliver richer details. This 48MP provides 2x optical zoom. That said, even though Apple didn't add a telephoto camera, you can zoom without losing quality on the standard iPhone model.

For the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple has upgraded the 48MP main camera by giving users the flexibility of using the new 24MP super-high-resolution default. The main camera allows users to switch between three popular focal lengths — 24 mm, 28 mm, and 35 mm — and even choose one as a new default. In addition to 48MP ProRAW, the main camera supports 48MP HEIF images with 4x more resolution. iPhone 15 Pro features an expansive 3x Telephoto camera, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max provides the longest optical zoom ever on an iPhone: 5x at 120 mm.

The new Telephoto camera on iPhone 15 Pro Max has an innovative tetraprism design with a combined optical image stabilization and autofocus 3D sensor-shift module, Apple’s most advanced stabilization system yet.

Camera upgrades for all four models

iPhone 15 next-generation portraitsImage source: Apple Inc.

All four iPhone 15 models offer some similar camera capabilities. Here they are:

Smart HDR 5: New Smart HDR captures subjects and the background with more true-to-life renderings of skin tones while ensuring photos have brighter highlights, richer midtones, and deeper shadows when viewed in the Photos app. This advanced HDR rendering is also available to third-party apps, so images can look even better when shared online.

Night Mode: It gets better with sharper details and more vivid colors, now powered by the Photonic Engine. iPhone 15 Pro models get improved Night mode portraits thanks to the LiDAR scanner.

Next-generation Portrait mode: For the first time, users can take portraits without switching to Portrait mode. When a person, dog, or cat is in the frame, or when a user taps to focus, iPhone automatically captures depth information so that users can turn photos into stunning portraits later in the Photos app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. For greater creative control, users can also adjust the focus point after taking the photo.

Apple Vision Pro's Spatial Video feature comes to the iPhone 15 Pro

After Apple announced its Vision Pro spatial computer, BGR wrote that it would be possible for a new iPhone to feature Spatial Video. This function lets you record 3D videos, which will be perfect to watch on the Vision Pro headset.

During its Wonderlust event, Apple announced that the iPhone 15 Pro is the first device to record Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro. Users can capture precious moments in three dimensions and relive those memories with incredible depth on the company's spatial computer when available early next year in the US.

USB-C powers this iPhone

All four iPhone 15 models ditched the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. While the regular models get USB-C 2.0, the Pro versions get USB-C 3.0 standards, which gives transfer speeds up to 10 gigabits per second, up to 20x faster than before. That said, users must buy a new cable, which is not the braided one available in the box of this iPhone, to get these transfer speeds.

Everything you can connect to your iPhone 15 with the USB-C port

Unlike the Lightning port on previous iPhones, Apple has been pretty generous with the new USB-C port, meaning you can connect basically any peripheral to this device. With it, you can:

  • Charge other devices: You can use your iPhone to charge your AirPods, Apple Watch, or another small device that supports USB Power Delivery at up to 4.5 watts or to charge a device that has a Lightning connector, connect it to your iPhone using an Apple USB-C to Lightning cable.
  • Play audio: If you need to play audio through the USB-C connector to other speakers or headphones, you can connect using the Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter or the Apple USB-C to Lightning Adapter.
  • Connect to display and monitors: You can connect your iPhone to external displays using the USB-C connector so that you can watch video, see photos, and more on a larger screen. Depending on the display that you're connecting to, you might need an adapter. iPhone uses the DisplayPort protocol to support connections to USB-C displays at up to 4K resolution and 60Hz. In addition, you can connect your iPhone to an HDMI display or TV with a USB-C to an HDMI adapter or cable. Adapters and cables that support HDMI 2.0 can output video from your iPhone at 4K resolution and 60Hz.

You can also connect your iPhone 15 with:

  • CarPlay compatible cars
  • External storage devices
  • Monitors and external displays
  • Microphones
  • External battery packs
  • USB to Ethernet adapters
  • SD cards using SD card adapters

Second-gen ultrawide-band chip and Roadside Assistance via satellite

In addition, these phones also have a new ultrawide-band chip, which I wished Apple would have called U2 instead of "second generation ultrawide-band chip." It connects to a device three times farther, unlocking the ability to use Precision Find to find friends in a crowd, for example.

Roadside Assistance via satelliteImage source: Apple Inc.

Finally, Apple is adding a new "peace of mind" feature called Roadside Assistance via satellite, and it joins the current Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection. With this new function, when users have car trouble and cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, they can now connect to AAA, the country’s largest roadside assistance provider.

An intuitive interface, including a short questionnaire to capture important details, will transmit the information via satellite so AAA can message the user directly and dispatch help to their exact location. Access to Roadside Assistance via satellite will be included for free for two years. Service is covered according to AAA membership but is also available separately for nonmembers.

Review

BGR reviewed both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These are our thoughts on the standard model:

The iPhone 15 may not represent a massive shift in iPhone development, but it does improve on many aspects of using the phone. The camera is better, the screen is brighter, the phone is more comfortable to hold, and it can finally charge through USB-C. Even when summed, it’s probably not worth upgrading from an iPhone 14 — but if you have an older device, you’ll get some solid improvements in the iPhone 15.

Our thoughts on the high-end iPhone model:

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is the best iPhone ever. It has an incredibly powerful chip, sleek new design elements, USB-C, and a better camera. If you want the best, it’s absolutely worth considering the iPhone 15 Pro Max — and I would absolutely consider buying the iPhone 15 Pro Max over the standard iPhone 15 Pro unless you really don’t like big phones and don’t mind skipping out on the better zoom.

tvOS 17

tvOS 17 is Apple's newest Apple TV and HomePod operating system. After two years of minor updates, the Cupertino firm finally gave keynote time for this operating system and announced several new features. Here's what we know about the company's biggest update yet for the Apple TV software, tvOS 17.

Features

Apple TV appImage source: Apple

tvOS 17 focuses on a new FaceTime experience while tweaking the Control Center and improving the general usage of the Apple TV.

FaceTime, video conferencing, and more

For the first time, the Apple TV hardware integrates with the iPhone camera with the Continuity Camera feature on tvOS 17. With that, Apple added the FaceTime app to the set-top box.

With FaceTime on Apple TV 4K, users can initiate calls directly from Apple TV, start them on iPhone or iPad, and hand them off to Apple TV. It uses Continuity Camera support to connect to the user’s iPhone or iPad wirelessly and leverages the device’s camera and microphone to bring participants together on the TV. It also works with Center Stage, so everyone keeps in the room framed on the screen.

Later this year, video conferencing apps like Webex by Cisco and Zoom will launch on tvOS, bringing their communications capabilities to Apple TV 4K. Developers can use Continuity Camera APIs on Apple TV 4K to integrate the iPhone or iPad camera and microphone into their tvOS app.

In addition, Apple Music Sing also integrates with Continuity Camera so Apple TV users can see themselves onscreen and add "entertaining filters" while singing. Despite that, Apple Music on Apple TV doesn't seem to be adding credit to songs, which is available for iOS 17. The iPhone operating system also brings a new cover for when music is playing on Apple Music, but it also doesn't seem to be the case with the Apple TV, as the player remains the same.

Revamped Control Center and Profile updates

While iOS 17 didn't get a revamped Control Center as it was rumored, the Apple TV with tvOS 17 did. The new Control Center focuses on making things easier for the Apple TV. From there, you can see the system status, the current time, and the active profile. It also makes connecting Bluetooth devices or checking your Home accessories easier. Bringing the new UI to multiple platforms, a new Control Center interface is also available in watchOS 10.

With fast Profile switching, users just need to wake up the Apple TV with the remote app on the iPhone's Control Center, and it will automatically switch to that person's profile, ensuring they have access to their recently watched shows and personalized recommendations.

To improve that experience, customized Settings for Profiles are now saved for each user's profile with tvOS 17, including their system language and paired AirPods.

Find My Siri Remote

Apple TV 4K 2021 MainImage source: Christian de Looper for BGR

Apple still hasn't added the U1 chip to the Siri Remote, but second-generation models or later can be found through the Find My app. This works similarly to finding an AirPods. With the iPhone connecting to the Siri Remote by Bluetooth, a proximity sensor can help you discover how close you are to the Apple TV accessory.

To work, you need to update your Siri Remote to version 10M4782 or 10M4784 for the 2nd-gen and 3rd-gen remotes, respectively.

More features available for Apple TV users

HomePod 2 tvOS 17Image source: Apple Inc.

Dolby Vision 8.1 support offers Apple TV 4K users a more cinematic visual experience with dynamic metadata over a broader range of movies and TV shows.

Apple Fitness+ enhancements include Custom Plans, a new way for Fitness+ users to receive a custom workout. By building a plan, you can choose the following:

  • The weekly schedule or when you’re going to exercise;
  • The total time of workout per day;
  • The length of the plan (I chose five weeks);
  • The activity type, the trainers you like the most, and the music you want to listen to.

Apple fitness service also adds Stacks, which allows users to select multiple workouts and meditations to seamlessly do back-to-back. Audio Focus gives users the ability to prioritize the volume of the music or the trainers’ voices.

Third-party VPN apps support: It enables developers to create VPN apps for Apple TV. This can benefit enterprise and education users wanting to access content on their private networks, allowing Apple TV to be a great office and conference room solution in even more places.

tvOS 17.1 features

Apple released tvOS 17.1 for Apple TV and HomePod Software Version 17.1 for HomePod models. The main feature available is the expansion of the Enhanced Dialogue feature to all HomePods, as long as they're a pair. Here's what you need to know about this feature:

  • Enhance Dialogue: It lets Apple TV users hear more clearly what is being said over the effects, action, and music in a movie or TV show on Apple TV 4K paired with HomePod by separating the dialogue from the background noise and bringing it forward to the center channel.

tvOS 17 code reveals unreleased iPhone models

During the beta test of tvOS 17, X user @aaronp613 discovered references to six unreleased iPhone models on this operating system beta code. According to him, four of these iPhones were added in tvOS 17 beta 1 and removed in beta 5, which is why he discovered them. Two other models were added with beta 5, and they are really intriguing, as there are no rumors regarding these two additional models.

From the models discovered, iPhone15,4 and iPhone15,5 are likely the standard and Plus versions of the iPhone 15 running the A16 Bionic chip, while iPhone16,1 and iPhone16,2 refer to the Pro and Pro Max iterations with the A17 Pro processor.

Currently, the only iPhone models with an A15 Bionic chip are the iPhone SE 3, all iPhone 13 models, and the regular iPhone 14 versions. That said, we have six iPhones using the same processor. As Apple doesn’t sell the iPhone 13 Pro models anymore, this could mean the company could be planning to release a USB-C version of at least two iPhones with the A15 Bionic chip. That said, Apple hasn't updated older iPhones with a USB-C port, so it remains unclear which were these other two iPhone models.

HomePod Software Version 17 features

Over the tvOS 16 cycle, Apple added several new features for HomePod owners. The new operating system for the company's smart speakers, which is a variation of tvOS, has one notable function, which requires an Apple TV 4K and a pair of HomePods. Here it is:

Enhance Dialogue: It lets Apple TV users hear more clearly what is being said over the effects, action, and music in a movie or TV show on Apple TV 4K paired with two HomePods by separating the dialogue from the background noise and bringing it forward to the center channel.

With the new systems available, Apple announced other features:

  • Siri support for AirPlay allows you to start an AirPlay session from your iPhone or iPad directly on your HomePod using just your voice so that you can play an even wider range of third-party music services on your HomePod.
  • New call controls enable you to mute or unmute a call on HomePod.

tvOS 17 release date

After unveiling tvOS 17 at the WWDC 2023 keynote, Apple released the first beta of this operating system to developers. A public beta has been available since July 12, and the general release since September 18. Apple confirmed this information after the iPhone 15 event.

tvOS 17 beta and public beta

Both developer and public beta versions are already available for Apple TV. Unlike the iOS 17 beta, anyone can enroll in the program. On the Apple TV, follow these steps:

  • Open Settings

macOS Sonoma beta

macOS 14 Sonoma is Apple's newest operating system for its Mac models. After tightening the integration between Mac and iPad with Stage Manager and the Freeform app with macOS 13 Ventura, here’s what we know about the company’s new version of macOS.

What will Apple call macOS 14?

During the WWDC 2023 keynote, Apple announced that macOS 14 would be called Sonoma. This is a historic city in northern California at the heart of the renowned Sonoma Valley winemaking region. For this operating system, Apple invites users to "come for the power and stay for the fun."

Features

Unlike other years, macOS Sonoma focuses on more Mac functions rather than integration between Mac and iPad. This operating system improves video call experiences and boosts gaming performance. Here are its top features.

Video conferencing

macOS 14 SonomaImage source: Apple Inc.

Presenter Overlay keeps you part of the conversation when sharing your screen on a video call. You can choose between two overlays, large and small. While the large overlay keeps the spotlighting you, with your screen framed next to you on a separate layer, the small option puts you on a small bubble floating on the presentation.

During FaceTime or video conferencing calls, you can react with your hands. This feature adds a reaction that fills the camera frame with fun 3D augmented reality effects like hears, confetti, fireworks, and more.

There's even a new screen-sharing picker that lets you share an app or even multiple apps when on a video call, and with your Studio Display or iPhone as a camera, you can adjust the frame with zoom and pan controls or use Recenter to automatically place yourself in the center of the frame in a call.

Gaming

macOS Sonoma adds Game Mode, which automatically gives games top priority on the CPU and GPU of your Mac, lowering usage for background tasks while dramatically reducing latency with wireless accessories.

Screen Savers and widgets on desktop

Widgets on macOS SonomaImage source: Apple Inc.

macOS Sonoma brings new slow-motion screen savers of "breathtaking" locations from around the world. When you log in, they seamlessly become your desktop wallpaper. During the beta phase, Apple added several Apple TV screensavers for this operating system, which can also be used as wallpapers. In addition, you can finally place widgets on your desktop from your widget gallery.

These widgets are interactive, and with Continuity, you can add your iPhone widgets to your desktop without having to install the corresponding apps on your Mac.

Besides that, when you open an app or window or use Stage Manager, widgets fade into the background so you can concentrate on the task.

Safari and Passwords

Safari has lots of new features. Now, you can create a profile to keep your browsing, history, extensions, Tab Groups, cookies, and favorites separated for topics like Work and Personal.

Apple says Search in Safari with macOS Sonoma is also more responsive and shows easier-to-read and more relevant suggestions. Another feature is web apps that come to your dock. You can launch a web app to get an app-like experience with a simplified toolbar.

Apple is also enhancing private browsing by letting you lock your private browsing windows when you're not using them. It completely blocks known trackers from loading on pages and removes tracking added to URLs as you browse. This feature is also available for iOS 17.

For Passwords, Apple now lets you share a set of passwords with your trusted contacts. You can create a group and choose a set of accounts to share. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

PDF and Notes

In addition, macOS Sonoma improves enhanced AutoFill for PDF. The system picks saved information from Contacts to fill out a PDF or scanned document faster.

You can also view a full-width PDF right in Notes and click between pages. You can even keep more than one PDF in the same note for easy access to related documents. Lastly, you can start a document in Notes and finish in Pages by clicking the Share button. The same is worth it for iPadOS 17.

Exclusive features to Apple Silicon Macs

Although macOS Sonoma is compatible with several Intel Macs, some features are exclusive to Apple Silicon computers. Here they are:

  • Presenter Overlay: On a videoconferencing call, macOS Sonoma has a new Presenter Overlay feature that keeps you part of the conversation when sharing your screen. You can choose from two overlays, large and small. The large overlay keeps the spotlight on you, with your screen framed next to you on a separate layer. You can move, walk, and talk in front of your content.
  • React with your hands: On a FaceTime call, you can add reactions that fill the camera frame with fun 3D AR effects like hearts, confetti, fireworks, and more. You can also share a reaction with just a hand gesture as well. This feature works with the built-in camera of Apple Silicon Macs or any Mac with the Continuity Camera feature on an iPhone 12.
  • Accessibility: Personal Voice helps users with speech loss create a voice that sounds like them, then use it with Live Speech to communicate in FaceTime calls and in-person conversations. Made for iPhone, hearing devices can now pair directly with Mac, so users with hearing disabilities can take calls and have conversations more conveniently.
  • Game Mode: Game Mode automatically gives games top priority on the CPU and GPU of your Apple Silicon with macOS Sonoma, lowering usage for background tasks. And it dramatically reduces latency with wireless accessories, like AirPods and your favorite controllers.
  • Siri: With macOS Sonoma, Apple Silicon Mac users don’t need to say “Hey Siri” anymore, as the personal assistant is now triggered by only Siri.

New emojis are coming at a later date

Every major macOS update always offers new emojis. With iOS 16.4, Apple released 20+ emojis. Now, Unicode has previewed the 100+ new emojis that could land with macOS Sonoma later next year. According to an Emojipedia blog post, there are a total of 108 new emojis when you include skin tone modifiers and gender variants that could be available with Unicode’s Emoji 15.1 update.

The draft list includes a Lime, a head shaking vertically, a phoenix bird (Moltres, for Pokémon fans), and four new gender-neutral family emojis intended to be represented via silhouettes. ll of these figures will be sent for approval this September.

macOS 14.1 features

Review

BGR made an in-depth review of macOS Sonoma. This update is not as impressive as Big Sur or High Sierra, which means you get new features but also old bugs. Here's a quote of the analysis:

Personally, macOS Sonoma felt a bit slow in the first few days I started using the first RC version, and then everything became smooth again. If you use specific software for your tasks, double-check before updating, as you’re not missing a lot if you stay in the most stable version of macOS Ventura.

watchOS 10 is Apple’s newest operating system for Apple Watch models. The next generation of watchOS brings a redesign for larger displays, a focus on widgets, apps, new workout features, and stacks to Watch Faces.

Features

Here's everything new with the Apple Watch, thanks to the watchOS 10 update.

Redesigned interface, new Watch Faces, Smart Stack feature, and new Control Center button

watchOS 10 Smart StackImage source: José Adorno for BGR

Apple says that "virtually every app has been rethought." With that, these apps use the entire screen to create new places for content so you can see and do more, which is especially useful for a larger Apple Watch display. In addition, Apple added two new Watch Faces, Pallet and Snoopy.

With Smart Stack widgets, you get the information you need below any Watch Face. You just need to turn the Digital Crown to reveal widgets in the Smart Stack. It includes multiple timers, your next meeting, music playing, and more.

The Control Center is now available when pressing the side button. Pressing the Digital Crown once still opens the App Library – which has been reimagined – and pressing twice opens the cards added to your Apple Wallet.

Cycling and Hiking workouts revamp

With watchOS 9, Apple revamped Running workouts. Now, with watchOS 10, the company focused on Cycling and Hiking. Here are the highlights for each of the exercises.

Cycling

  • Automatically connect to Bluetooth-enabled accessories to add cadence, speed, and power to your Workout View
  • When a power meter is detected, Apple Watch will automatically estimate your Functional Threshold Power
  • When starting a cycling workout from your Watch, it will automatically show up as a Live Activity on your iPhone

Hiking

  • See a three-dimensional view of where you've been using Elevation Views. Get estimates of where you last had reception with Cellular Connectivity Waypoints
  • Search for and discover important details of nearby trails, including name, length, time, elevation, gain, and more
  • Topographic maps (first available in the US) let you explore mountains, valleys, lakes, and rivers in detail
  • Elevation alerts: get notified when you've passed a particular elevation threshold.

watchOS 10 expands mental health awareness

watchOS 10 log State of MindImage source: José Adorno for BGR

watchOS 10 lets you log your state of mind by scrolling through engaging visuals to help you select how you're feeling at that moment and during the day overall. Apple wants you to stay consistent with notifications and complications on watch faces.

In the Health app on the iPhone, it's also possible to see your state of mind and how it could correlate with lifestyle factors. In addition, you can still see your usage of the mindfulness app and other metrics, such as heart beating, sleep data, and more. The Medications app now gives you reminders to take your pills.

Lastly, your Apple Watch Series 6 (and later), SE 2, or newer can identify how much time you spend in daylight thanks to its ambient light sensor. The data is available in the Health app.

Custom Plans on Apple Fitness Plus

iOS 17 Apple Fitness Plus Custom PlansImage source: José Adorno for BGR

New features for Apple Fitness Plus on watchOS 10 include the ability to create a custom plan for your workouts. If you have a goal, such as a personal event, or want to lose weight, you can select your weekly schedule, how long you are planning to workout per day, the length of the plan (up to 8 weeks), and the activity types you're planning to engage.

Once you decide that, you can say exactly what kind of workout you want to practice each day, for how long, which trainer you prefer, and the kind of music. With the plan created, you can start engaging with them with suggestions for each day using your iPhone. You can rename the plan and end it once it's set up. I also tried a five-week Apple Fitness+ custom plan to see how it went.

While this feature will improve over time, it's possible that Apple has a different strategy for Custom Plans in the long run. In April, Bloomberg reported that Apple was working on a coaching service codenamed Quartz.

iOS 17 Apple Fitness+Image source: José Adorno for BGR

It’s reportedly being designed to “keep users motivated to exercise, improve eating habits, and help them sleep better, according to people with knowledge of the project. The idea is to use AI and data from an Apple Watch to make suggestions and create coaching programs tailored to specific users.”

This report looks a lot like most of the features Apple introduced with iOS 17 and watchOS 10, such as State of Mind and this Custom Plans feature combined with sleep data, but the company hasn’t integrated them all together yet. That said, I believe Custom Plans is just another step in the direction of a more expansive Apple Fitness+ Plus subscription.

You can also see how custom workout plans for Apple Fitness Plus might get BGR's Joe Wituschek to use the service again.

More features

watchOS 10 is still packed with some more new features, such as:

  • Workout APIs that let developers explore some powerful motion sensors in Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8 that can detect rapid changes in direction and acceleration;
  • Enterprise: watchOS 10 introduces the ability to implement mobile device management (MDM), configure VPNs, and deploy internal-use apps;
  • Offline maps: iOS 17 lets you download offline maps from Apple Maps and see them on Apple Watch.
  • Follow-up medication reminders: Help you stay on track with your medications;
  • Video message playback and audio calls: If someone leaves you a recorded video message on FaceTime, you can view it directly on your Apple Watch. And Group FaceTime audio calls are now supported;
  • Contacts app: Later this year, you'll be able to share your contact information using NameDrop. Just hold your Watch near an iPhone, and your contact card will be sent.

Apple Watch's new gestures

One of the reasons that makes watchOS 10 such a major update is that it also revamps how you use the Apple Watch. Once you install this new operating system, make sure to learn the new gestures. Here's what changes and what stays the same:

  • Sliding your finger up: Opens the new Smart Stack feature;
  • Sliding your finger left/right: Doesn't trigger any action (previously, you could change Watch Faces);
  • Sliding your finger down: Opens Notifications;
  • Long press: Edit your Watch Face or select a new one;
  • Spinning Digital Crown: Opens the new Smart Stack feature;
  • One press with Digital Crown: Opens App Library or go back to Watch Face;
  • Double press with Digital Crown: Shows all your open apps;
  • One press with the Side Button: Opens Control Center;
  • Double press with the Side Button: Opens Apple Pay
  • Simultaneous press on Side Button and Digital Crown: Takes a screenshot.

Delayed features

Currently, Apple Watch users should look forward to these upcoming features:

  • Media suggestions will appear at the top of the Smart Stack if nothing is playing on a nearby HomePod
  •  Audio Focus gives users the ability to prioritize the volume of the music or the trainers’ voices in Apple Fitness+.

If we learn about other delayed features, we'll update this section.

watchOS 10.1 features

watchOS 10.1 has been available since October 25. These are the new features of this update:

  • Double tap gestures: Users can easily control the Apple Watch Series 9 using just one hand and without touching the display by tapping the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on the Watch. The faster Neural Engine enables this new double tap gesture, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm.
  • NameDrop from iPhone to Apple Watch: NameDrop is a new feature that lets you easily share your contact information from one iPhone to another by approaching them. Apple says that nearing an iPhone to Apple Watch to perform the same action will be possible later this year with the Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (1st and 2nd generation), and Apple Watch Ultra.

This update also brings important bug fixes:

  • My Card is available as a complication for quick access to NameDrop
  • Fix for bug that causes the climate section in the Home app to be blank
  • Addresses an issue that causes a white selection border to be unexpectedly displayed after turning off AssistiveTouch
  • Fixes an issue where cities may not sync between iPhone and Watch in Weather
  • Resolves an issue where the scroll bar may unexpectedly be visible on the display
  • Fix for bug that causes elevation to be incorrect for some users.

Since the processor available on Apple Watches hasn't advanced much in the past years, the smartwatches that receive this operating system update are the same that got watchOS 9 - in addition to the two new models announced.

  • Apple Watch Series 4 (2018)
  • Apple Watch Series 5 (2019)
  • Apple Watch SE (2020)
  • Apple Watch Series 6 (2020)
  • Apple Watch Series 7 (2021)

  • Apple Watch Ultra (2022)
  • Apple Watch Series 9 (2023)
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023)

Besides one of the smartwatches above, you must have an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or newer running iOS 17 to take advantage of the features above.

Review

BGR wrote an in-depth review of watchOS 10. We are truly excited about the redesign and all the new features available with this system.

watchOS 10 is surely a significant upgrade. General stability and battery throughout the day were great during the second phase of beta testing. Even though this year’s Apple Watch hardware doesn’t seem too exciting, this new operating system will give Apple smartwatch owners a breeze of fresh air. And, like me, it might make some people decide to upgrade their older Watches to new ones.

iPadOS 17 new Lock Screen

iPadOS 17 is Apple’s newest operating system for its iPad models. After tightening the integration between iPad and Mac with Stage Manager and Freeform app with iPadOS 16, Apple offered a few design changes with the new system. Here's what you need to know about the company's new iPadOS update.

Features

iPadOS 17 shares several of the features available for iOS 17. Even so, Apple has focused on some new tricks for the iPad, such as a revamped Lock Screen, interactive widgets, a new Health app, and more. These features are coming to the iPad mini, iPad Air, iPad Pro, and base-model iPad users in general.

Lock Screen, interactive widgets, and Live Activities

Interactive widgets on iPad via iPadOS 17.

After iOS 16 brought a revamp to the Lock Screen, it's time for iPadOS 17 to follow. You can make the iPad's Lock Screen more customizable by adding a custom look for it. There are stock wallpapers like Astronomy and Kaleidoscope, or you can choose a photo from your library.

This system also brings an all-new motion effect for Live Photos, making your Lock Screen feel more customizable and dynamic when you wake the iPad and jump into your Home Screen.

iPadOS 17 also introduces Live Activities, which helps you stay on top of things happening in real-time, such as a food order, a flight, a game score, and more.

In addition, with widgets on your Lock Screen with iPadOS 17, you can see information like the weather, time, date, battery levels, or upcoming events at a glance on your iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini, or iPad Pro. There are also interactive widgets on your Home Screen, which let you play music, turn off the lights, and more, right from a widget. These changes could even tease the long-rumored OLED iPad Pro, expected to be released in 2024.

FaceTime and Messages improvements

For FaceTime, when users call someone who is unavailable, they can share a message in audio or video that can be enjoyed later with iPadOS 17. In addition, the app adds Reactions such as hearts, balloons, fireworks, and more.

Messages app, for example, lets you create Live Stickers, and a new drawer in the keyboard puts all of a user’s stickers in one place for easier access across iPadOS. An expandable menu can be accessed with a simple tap to display iMessage apps. In addition, a new catch-up arrow indicates where the user last left off in the conversation, and replying inline is as simple as swiping on a text bubble.

Lastly, iPadOS 17 also filters messages by known and unknown senders.

Stage Manager and Freeform updates

iPadOS 17 improves last year's Stage Manager feature. While it was first delayed when Apple introduced it during the WWDC 2022 keynote, the company is making sure to ship the new features on day 1. With this update, Stage Manager offers a more flexible layout when moving and resizing windows (especially with an external display), so you can set up your workspace just how you want it. In addition, you can use the built-in camera in your external display for FaceTime and conference calls for the first time.

That said, the new operating system allows access to third-party webcams and microphones connected to the iPad Pro. It gives users more options than ever in their workflows, as they don't need to rely on Apple's own camera or mics.

Freeform on iPadOS 17, for example, adds new drawing tools, such as a watercolor brush, calligraphy pen, highlighter, variable-width pen, and ruler. With Shape Recognition, users can hand draw a shape like a square and watch a perfect version snap into place. In addition, users running Freeform on iPadOS 17 can finally see what your collaborators are working on with Follow Along. It shows what they see as they move around the infinite canvas.

Health app now on a larger display

iPadOS 17 brings a new Health app for iPad.

The Health app comes to iPad with iPadOS 17 by optimizing all the data on a larger display. You can see rich details in favorites, review trends and highlights, and use interactive charts. You can create medication reminders, track your menstrual cycle, and log symptoms right from your iPad running iPadOS 17.

In addition, you can now reflect on your state of mind with new features for mental health. Access standardized assessments often used in clinics to understand your current risk for depression and anxiety and if you’d benefit from a discussion with a healthcare provider.

Autocorrection and Dictation are more intelligent than ever

Apple says Autocorrect on iPadOS 17 received a comprehensive update with a transformer language model for word prediction. It also received a refreshed design to better support typing, and sentence-level autocorrections can fix more grammatical mistakes.

Users can receive predictive text recommendations inline as they type, so adding entire words or completing sentences is as easy as tapping the space bar, making text entry faster than ever. Dictation also has a new speech recognition model to make it even more accurate.

Safari and Passwords

Safari has lots of new features. iPad users will be able to create a profile to keep their browsing, history, extensions, Tab Groups, cookies, and favorites separated for topics like Work and Personal.

Apple says Search in Safari with iPadOS 17 is also more responsive and shows easier-to-read and more relevant suggestions. Another feature is web apps that come to your dock. You can launch a web app to get an app-like experience with a simplified toolbar.

Apple is also enhancing private browsing by letting you lock your private browsing windows when you’re not using them. It completely blocks known trackers from loading on pages and removes tracking added to URLs as you browse.

For Passwords, Apple now lets you share a set of passwords with your trusted contacts. You can create a group and choose a set of accounts to share. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

PDF and Notes

Working on PDF files in Notes on iPad.

iPadOS 17 improves enhanced AutoFill for PDF. The system picks saved information from Contacts to fill out a PDF or scanned document faster.

You can also view a full-width PDF right in the Notes app and click between pages. You can even keep more than one PDF in the same note for easy access to related documents. In addition, you can start a document in the Notes app and finish in Pages by clicking the Share button.

Lastly, you can quickly add links on the Notes app from one note to another. Apple says it's a powerful way to "connect research notes, reference a recipe, or even create wikis for your team."

Use your iPad to play Nintendo Switch games and more

Nintendo Switch sitting on a bed

With iPadOS 17, the iPad now supports more accessories connected with its USB-C port. That said, you can turn your iPad into a monitor to play Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox games.

Before you can get started playing Switch and PS5 games on your iPad, you’re going to need a couple of things:

  • A USB-C capture card
  • An iPad with USB-C
  • A capture card application
  • A Nintendo Switch or PS5 with an HDMI cord

Once you have all these things, it’s time to start.

First, plug your console into the wall and set it all up. Next, you will plug your capture card into the console you are trying to play using an HDMI cord. In this example, we’ll use a Nintendo Switch.

Once the capture card is connected to the Switch, you will plug the USB-C end into the iPad’s USB-C port. Make sure to plug it directly into the iPad. From here, open the capture card app (several people recommend Capture Pro, currently only available in TestFlight) on your iPad and turn on the Nintendo Switch. Once everything has powered up, you should see the Switch’s home screen on your iPad, allowing you to get started and select the games you want to play.

Journaling app for mental health

Another feature Apple announced as a “new experience” is a Journal app. Using on-device machine learning, it will display personalized suggestions that inspire a user’s journal entry.

Suggestions are intelligently curated from recent activity, including photos, people, places, workouts, and more, making it easy to start a journal entry, and scheduled notifications can help build a journaling habit. It will be available at a later date, probably with iPadOS 17.1.

New emojis

New iOS 17 emojisImage source: Emojipedia

Every major iPadOS update offers new emojis. For example, Apple released 20+ emojis for iPadOS 16 with iPadOS 16.4. Unicode has previewed the 100+ new emojis that could land with iPadOS 17 later next year.

We could see them on the iPhone with an upcoming iPadOS 17 update if they get approved.

AirPods Pro 2 feels much better with iPadOS 17

Apple AirPods Pro 2Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR

With iPadOS 17 available, Apple also upgraded AirPods Pro 2 with several new features thanks to a firmware update. Here they are:

Adaptative Audio: AirPods Pro 2 offers Adaptative Audio, which Apple says “dynamically blends Transparency mode and Active Noise Cancellation together based on the conditions of a user’s environment to deliver the best experience at the moment.”

Conversation Awareness: Another feature that comes alongside Adaptative Audio is conversation awareness. AirPods Pro 2 owners can easily start a conversation while listening to a song. This function reduces background noise and amplifies the voice of the person in front of you.

Mute or unmute: When on a phone call, pressing the stern sensor of your AirPods Pro 2 will mute/unmute your voice. Previously, pressing the stern would hang up the call.

Automatic Switching: The company states that the “connection time between a user’s Apple devices is significantly faster and more reliable.”

Personalized Volume: This feature relies on machine learning so your AirPods Pro 2 can “understand conditions and listening preferences over time to automatically fine-tune the media experience” and protect your ears in the long run.

Just Siri: Users can say “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri” now.

More iPadOS 17 features

There are even more new features with iPadOS 17:

  • AirDrop transfers: AirDrop transfers continue even if you step away. The content you share over AirDrop will be sent securely and in full quality over the internet if you leave the AirDrop range and both you and your recipient are signed in to iCloud;
  • Find My: Share AirTag or Find My network accessories with up to five other people. Everyone in the group can play a sound to pinpoint the location of a shared AirTag when they’re nearby.
  • Apple Maps: Save an area of a map to your iPad and explore it while offline. View information like hours and ratings on place cards and get turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, or riding transit.
  • Lockdown Mode: The expanded Lockdown Mode increases security to help protect against sophisticated cyber-attacks – including the Apple Watch as well;
  • Photos: The People album is better than ever at recognizing your favorite people and includes the cats and dogs that are part of your family too;
  • Apple ID: Securely sign in to your iPad using a nearby device or any email address or phone number listed in your account on iPadOS 17.

iPadOS 17.1 features

iPadOS 17.1 was released on October 25. These are the features of this new operating system update:

  • Apple Music Playlist Suggestions: When adding a song to a playlist, Apple Music now suggests a few songs based on the music available on the list.
  • Apple Music Favorite Songs: Apple Music also lets you favorite songs, albums, playlists, and artists. Your favorite music is automatically added to your Library and improves your recommendations.
  • Apple Music Playlist Covers: The service lets you create custom playlist covers. Apple offers eight different options.
  • AirDrop with Cellular Data: Teased during the WWDC 2023 keynote, you can now continue to send and receive content when Wi-Fi is unavailable during AirDrop.

Accessibility features confirmed before WWDC 2023

Apple iOS 17 accessibility features May 2023

In a press release, Apple announced “new features for cognitive accessibility, along with Live Speech, Personal Voice, and Point and Speak in Magnifier.” These will be available "later this year," which means they will release alongside iPadOS 17.

One of the most exciting features is Personal Voice, a new feature that allows users to recreate their voice by recording around 15 minutes of audio. Apple says the feature was made to assist those who may be at risk of losing their voice.

Personal Voice works with Live Voice, another feature announced. Live Voice will allow users to type what they want to say and then have that spoken for them on a phone or FaceTime call. If you use Personal Voice, the person on the other end of the call will hear your actual voice, even though you simply typed a response.

The company also revealed Assistive Access, which introduces a customized experience for the Phone FaceTime, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Music apps. Apple says that the feature offers a “distinct interface with high contrast buttons and large text labels, as well as tools to help trusted supporters tailor the experience for the individual they support. For example, for users who prefer communicating visually, Messages includes an emoji-only keyboard and the option to record a video message to share with loved ones.”

Delayed features

Even though iPadOS 17 is full of new features, a few of them won’t be available at launch. Here’s what’s coming at a later date.

Apple Music Collaborative Playlist: Later this year, you’ll be able to invite friends to collaborate on playlists. They will be able to add, reorder, and remove songs. In addition, you’ll be able to react to the song choices in Now Playing.

AirPlay in your hotel room: AirPlay will be available later this year in supporting hotel rooms.

Journal app: Apple says this app lets you “capture your thoughts on life’s big events or everyday activities. Add details to any entry with photos, music, audio recordings, and more. Mark important moments and revisit them later to find new insights or set new goals.”

iPadOS 17 release date

After previewing iPadOS 17 during the WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5, Apple released the first beta for developers to try out the upcoming features. In July, a public beta of the iPad operating system was made available to consumers. The official release date of iPadOS 17.0 was September 18; Apple announced it after the iPhone 15 event.

iOS 17 is Apple's newest operating system for its iPhone models. Previewed during the WWDC 2023 keynote, the Cupertino firm focused on three main features: communication, intelligence, and new experiences. Here's everything you need to know about the new operating system.

When does iOS 17 come out? September 18

After previewing iOS 17 during the WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5th, Apple released the first beta for developers to try out the upcoming features. On July 12, a public beta was made available to consumers.

After the iPhone 15 event wrapped up, Apple announced that iOS 17 would be available as a free update on September 18.

Features

iOS 17 is full of new features for iPhone users. BGR has compiled the most important ones here for you.

Phone, Messages, and FaceTime

iOS 17's new personalized Contact Poster feature.

For the first time since iOS 7, Apple revamped the Phone app. It brings personalized Contact Posters, which provide a new way for users to express themselves by customizing how they appear, bringing a completely new look to incoming calls. They can choose treatments for photos or Memoji and eye-catching typography and font colors.

After customizing your contact info, you can share it with NameDrop. It allows users to easily share contact information by simply bringing their iPhones together. This is the same gesture to start SharePlay to listen to music, watch a movie, or play a game.

NameDrop iOS 17Image source: Apple Inc.

With Live Voicemail, you can see real-time transcription when someone leaves a voicemail. Calls identified as spam by carriers won't appear as Live Voicemail and will be instantly declined.

For FaceTime, when users call someone who is unavailable, they can share a message in audio or video that can be enjoyed later. In addition, the app adds Reactions such as hearts, balloons, fireworks, and more.

Messages app, for example, lets you create Live Stickers, and a new drawer in the keyboard puts all of a user's stickers in one place for easier access across iOS. An expandable menu can be accessed with a simple tap to display iMessage apps. In addition, a new catch-up arrow indicates where the user last left off in the conversation, and replying inline is as simple as swiping on a text bubble.

Check-In is one of Apple's most important security features ever made

Although this is a Messages feature, Check In deserves its own subheadline. This is an important feature when a user wants to notify a family member or friend that they have made it to their destination safely.

After a user initiates a Check In, their friend or family member will automatically be notified as soon as the user arrives. If they are not making progress toward their destination, useful information will be temporarily shared with the selected contact, such as the device’s location, battery level, and cell service status. Any information shared is end-to-end encrypted.

Autocorrection and Dictation are more intelligent than ever

Dictation iOS 17

Apple says Autocorrect received a comprehensive update with a transformer language model for word prediction. It also received a refreshed design to better support typing, and sentence-level autocorrections can fix more types of grammatical mistakes.

Users can receive predictive text recommendations inline as they type, so adding entire words or completing sentences is as easy as tapping the space bar, making text entry faster than ever. Dictation also has a new speech recognition model to make it even more accurate.

Siri now understands bilingual queries on your iPhone

During the beta phase of iOS 17, Apple added one of the most interesting features users could have ever asked for Siri: support for bilingual queries starting with select Indic languages.

That said, users can ask questions to Siri by mixing English and Hindi. People can also mix English with Telegu, Punjabi, Kannada, or Marathi.

There's no AI here, but there are already rumors Apple could introduce an AI Siri assistant as soon as iOS 18.

Apple Music now offers new tweaks

Apple Music has also added a few new things with iOS 17. For example, with this new operating system, Apple Music users will be able to use SharePlay to control the music in the car through CarPlay, so everyone can play their favorite songs and contribute to what’s playing.

In addition, animated covers don’t appear solely on the artist’s album page anymore but also on the music player. After years of this Android-only feature, Apple has added crossfade support between songs on iOS. Crossfade will smoothly transition between tracks, so the music never stops. In addition, you can finally see all the credits in a song.

Later this year, Apple Music on iOS 17 will let users invite friends to join a playlist so anyone can add, reorder, and remove songs. It will also be possible to use emojis to react to the song choices in Now Playing.

StandBy offers glanceable information while the iPhone is charging

StandBy is one of the new features coming in iOS 17.

StandBy is a new function that gives users a full-screen experience with glanceable information designed to be viewed from a distance when the iPhone is on its side and charging.

With support for Live Activities, Siri, incoming calls, and larger notifications, StandBy makes the iPhone even more useful when viewed at a distance.

When charging with MagSafe, StandBy remembers a user’s preferred view. It is easy to bring up StandBy anytime by tapping the screen, and on iPhone 14 Pro with the Always-On display, it is always available.

There are even more features available

  • Transliteration support on iOS for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, now supporting 10 indic languages;
  • Users can sign into Apple ID using their phone number instead of an email ID;
  • New built-in Punjabi dictionary;
  • The ability to see up to 2,000 calls in the call history section, including FaceTime and WhatsApp calls;
  • Apple Fitness+ lets you build custom plans with the workouts, trainers, and songs you like the most;
  • iOS 17 finally lets you download offline maps on Apple Maps.

Health app expands mental health awareness

Image source: José Adorno for BGR

The Health app on iOS 17 lets you log your state of mind by scrolling through engaging visuals to help you select how you’re feeling at that moment and during the day overall. In the Health app, it’s also possible to see your state of mind and how it could correlate with lifestyle factors.

With a new Mental Wellbeing section on the Health app, you can even log how anxious or depressed you feel. This will help you understand if you need to pursue medical help or not.

All of this data combines with a new Apple Watch Series 6 (and later), Apple Watch SE 2, or Apple Watch Ultra tracker available with watchOS 10 that identifies how much time you spend in daylight thanks to its ambient light sensor.

Journal app comes at a later date

Another feature that Apple announced as a "new experience" is a Journal app. Using on-device machine learning, it will display personalized suggestions that can inspire a user's journal entry.

Suggestions are intelligently curated from recent activity, including photos, people, places, workouts, and more, making it easy to start a journal entry, and scheduled notifications can help build a journaling habit.

Also, it's important to note that not every iOS 17 feature will be available to all compatible iPhone models.

New emojis

Upcoming iOS 17 emojisImage source: Emojipedia

Every major iOS update offers new emojis. For example, Apple released 20+ emojis for iOS 16 with iOS 16.4. Unicode has previewed the 100+ new emojis that could land with iOS 17 later next year.

We could see them on the iPhone with an upcoming iOS 17 update if they get approved.

AirPods Pro 2 features available with iOS 17

With iOS 17 available, Apple also upgraded AirPods Pro 2 with several new features alongside a firmware update.

Just Siri: Users are able to only say “Siri” instead of “Hey Siri."

Accessibility features confirmed before WWDC 2023

In a press release prior to WWDC, Apple announced “new features for cognitive accessibility, along with Live Speech, and Point and Speak in Magnifier.” These will be available "later this year," which means they will be released alongside iOS 17.

One of the most interesting features is Personal Voice, a new feature that allows users to recreate their voice by recording around 15 minutes of audio. Apple says that the feature was made to assist those who may be at risk of losing their voice.

Personal Voice works with Live Voice, another feature announced. Live Voice allows users to type what they want to say and then have that spoken for them on a phone or FaceTime call.

For example, for users who prefer communicating visually, Messages includes an emoji-only keyboard and the option to record a video message to share with loved ones.

iOS 17 delayed features

Even though iOS 17 is full of new features, a few of them aren't available at launch. Here's what's coming at a later date.

There are even more delayed features coming at a later date.

iOS 17.1 features

Apple released iOS 17.1 on October 25. These are the features available with the new operating system update:

  • NameDrop for Apple Watch: With iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1, Apple is finally enabling NameDrop from iPhone to Apple Watch. With that, you can seamlessly exchange contact information with others.
  • Flashlight Indicator on Dynamic Island: Previously limited to iPhone 15 Pro models, the flashlight indicator on Dynamic Island is also available for iPhone 14 Pro and all iPhone 15 models.
  • StandBy Mode tweaks: The StandBy Mode now has some customization options. Users can choose to turn it off automatically, after 20 seconds, or never.

Official iOS 17 download

iOS 17

Since September 18th, iOS 17 is available to all users. Developers and public beta testers can continue to enroll in the beta program to try upcoming features.

Can I download the iOS 17 beta? What about the public beta?

If you are a developer, yes, you can download the iOS 17 developer beta version as long as you are registered on Apple's Developer Program. BGR made a how-to on the process of downloading the iOS 17 beta.

A public test version launched on July 12. Like other years, you must enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program to agree to the terms and conditions; then you can try the public beta versions. BGR offers a step-by-step process for downloading iOS 17 public beta.

Supported devices

iPhone modelsImage source: José Adorno for BGR

With iOS 16, Apple was pretty radical about dropping support for old iPhones, meaning no more iPod touch could run the latest iOS version. In addition, only 2017 iPhone models or newer could update to iOS 16.

iOS 17 keeps ditching old phones. This time, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X models will not be supported by this new operating system. Here are all the iPhones that will be able to run the new OS:

  • iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen)
  • iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (3rd gen)
  • iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

Review

BGR published an in-depth review of iOS 17. Here's what we think about this operating system update:

With its latest operating system update for its most famous device, iOS 17 doesn’t reinvent the wheel but adds some nice-to-have features that you might think it’s worth updating your iPhone as soon as possible.

Messages, Health, and privacy changes are among the best new features available to this operating system.

iOS 18 is Apple's upcoming operating system for its iPhone models. Expected to be announced during the WWDC 2024 keynote, it's heavily expected that Apple will feature on AI applications, as it needs to catch up with Google, OpenAI, and other players. Here's everything you need to know about this upcoming operating system.

When will Apple announce iOS 18?

Apple CEO Tim Cook before WWDC 2023 keynote kicked offImage source: Apple Inc.

If Apple follows the trend, Apple should announce iOS 18 during the WWDC 2024 keynote. The Worldwide Developers Conference usually takes place in the first week of June. While it was previously held at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California, ever since the pandemic started, Apple started pre-recording the WWDC keynote and then making a hybrid approach by inviting developers and media personalities to watch the presentation from the Apple Park, in Cupertino.

The company is likely to announce the WWDC 2024 dates in April.

Rumored iOS 18 features

While we still have a long time before the WWDC 2024 keynote, and it's harder to predict software changes as Apple has more control over this information, we still don't know much about iOS 18 top features. So far, here's what we heard.

Generative AI could be a key part of the iOS 18 foundation

Siri on the Vision Pro headset. Apple GPT

Siri on the Vision Pro headset. Image source: Apple Inc.

According to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, iOS 18 could finally add generative AI features for the iPhone in late 2024. He suggested Apple is building a few hundred AI servers in 2023 and even more in 2024.

By combining cloud-based AI and on-device data processing, Apple would finally roll out its generative AI to iPhone and iPad users by late 2024, which means this would be part of the iOS 18 cycle.

This note comes after a few other reports about Apple’s future GPT. The Information shared that Cupertino is spending millions of dollars daily to train its large-language models – LLM for short.

While the publication said most of this investment would focus on AppleCare customers, the Siri team plans to incorporate these language models to make complex shortcut integrations much more accessible.

What’s interesting about this story is that people on the Apple team believe its most advanced language model, Ajax GPT, which Bloomberg already reported, might be better than OpenAI’s GPT. 3.5. Even though the other company is already working on better solutions, it’s good to know that Apple has dramatically improved in the conversational AI field.

New emojis

During every iOS cycle, Apple always adds new emojis. Even though they don't come with the first major update, the company unveils them during the life cycle of the newest operating system.

With iOS 17, Apple ditched the iPhone 8 and iPhone X models from its lineup. The company will likely remove even more iPhones when iOS 18 is available, especially if the company focuses on AI applications.

While we still don't know which models could be ditched with this next operating system update, here are all the iPhones that currently run iOS 17:

  • iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen)
  • iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12

The iPhone has been part of our lives for quite some time now. Some people don't even know a world where this device does not exist. First launched in 2007, Apple is currently up to the iPhone 15 series. In 2024, we expect Apple to unveil the iPhone 16 series, with up to five new models. After 16 years, there's a whole lot of story with this smartphone that changed mobile communications and even the world in general.

Here's a chronological list of every smartphone model that Apple has ever released.

The original iPhone

Launch date: June 29, 2007

With a 3.5-inch display, this multi-touch device had an interface different from everything people have ever used. It had 16GB of storage, featured a 2MP camera, and weighed just 135 grams.

Combining a mobile phone with Safari and the iPod, this smartphone still lacked an App Store, Cut and Paste function, and would only rely on a 2G or Wi-Fi connection. This is where the revolution started.

iPhone 3G

iPhone 3GImage source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: July 11, 2008

The difference between this mobile phone and the original one was the introduction of 3G connectivity and the introduction of the App Store. With storage options ranging from 8GB to 16GB, this phone still featured a 2MP camera.

Apple offered a design change with the iPhone 3G with a full-black back but still maintaining the 3.5-inch display and the classic home button. There was also a white version for the first time ever.

iPhone 3GS – S is for Speed

iPhone 3GSImage source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: June 19, 2009

The iPhone 3Gs offered the first spec bump. It sold a million units in the first week of sale and offered a better processor, a 3MP camera with video recording capabilities, and up to 32GB of storage.

iPhone 4 – the first redesign

iPhone 4Image source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: June 24, 2010

With the iPhone 4, Apple offered its first iPhone product redesign. While it still featured a 3.5-inch display, it got more squared with a stainless steel finish, a front-facing camera (with FaceTime support), a 5MP main lens, and, for the first time, Apple's custom chip, the A4.

With the fourth iteration, Apple introduced its Retina display brand with a higher resolution. Last but not least, this iPhone had the first Apple gate, the antenna gate, in which users would have lower cellular coverage depending on how they would hold the smartphone.

iPhone 4S - S is for Siri

iPhone 4SImage source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: October 14, 2011

The last model introduced while Steve Jobs was still alive. It got a spec bump on the camera with an 8MP main lens, up to 64GB of storage, and a dual-core A5 chip.

What made this device so important was the introduction of the virtual assistant Siri. At the time, Siri was way ahead of the competition and could answer almost anything you might need. Apple was also able to fix the antenna gate with this generation.

iPhone 5 - the second redesign

iPhone 5Image source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: September 21, 2012

With the iPhone 5, Apple redesigned its phone once again. This time, with a 4-inch Retina display with a nearly 16:9 aspect ratio, the company offered 1GB of RAM, the A6 chip, LTE connectivity, and ditched the 30-pin cable for the Lightning port.

That said, Apple still maintained an 8MP iSight camera and a 1.2MP FaceTime sensor. The company also offered up to 64GB of storage.

iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S

iPhone 5cImage source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: September 20, 2013

By the time Apple released the iPhone 5S, the company was offering a year of revolution and a year of evolution. With this model, the most impressive change was the addition of Touch ID. This way, you can unlock your cell phone with a biometrical sensor.

Apple introduced the 64-bit A7 chip but maintained most of the features of the iPhone 5. One notable change was the addition of a gold color.

Last but not least, Apple opted to launch a 5c – which the company wanted to call the "C" as colorful, but ultimately people called it cheap. It was made of plastic and was pretty much an iPhone 5 without any of the good parts of the smartphone. It offered up to 32GB of storage and the older A6 chip. At least, those looking to buy an Apple phone would find a better price in this smartphone, as the company discontinued the previous version.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus - Big and bigger

iPhone 6Image source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: September 19, 2014

After increasing the display size of the iPhone 5, Apple decided to tackle bigger screens one more time. The company bet on 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch options by launching two models at once.

With up to 128GB of storage, Apple finally brought a main 12MP camera, 2GB of memory, and the A8 chip for this series. These models had rounded edges, so it would be easier to hold them. In addition, Apple created a tweak called reachability, in which you could double tap the home button so the display information would lower half the screen.

iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

iPhone-6s

Launch date: September 25, 2015

While the latest generation suffered from Apple's second gate, the bend gate, the company decided to add a 7000 series aluminum alloy to this smartphone. Since it was very thin and light, it could bend with some pressure on it.

With this generation, Apple introduced the A9 chip, added the 3D Touch sensor (with the Live Photo gimmick), a second-generation Touch ID, the ability to record 4k 30 fps for the first time ever, and a 5MP front-facing camera. The iPhone 6s is also the first smartphone made by Apple to come in a pink color called rose gold.

iPhone SE

iPhone-SE

Launch date: March 31, 2016

After the iPhone 5c, Apple opted for a different approach. This time, the company brought back the stainless steel frame and a more premium look of the 5s to the SE. It had the same processor as the 6s model and the same camera capabilities, except for the 1.2MP front-facing lens.

This time, the iPhone SE offered a Touch ID sensor, 4G connectivity, and a premium look, but in a smaller format for those who didn't like big phones with a 4-inch display.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus - Dual sensor cameras are here

iPhone 7 2016Image source: Apple Inc.

Launch date: September 16, 2016

Starting with 32GB of storage, Apple opted to offer 128GB and 256GB options with the iPhone 7. This smartphone had 3GB of RAM and the A10 Fusion chip. At the time, this model was considered the thinnest smartphone in the world, as it was 7.1 mm thick. After that, Apple never again promoted its smartphones as "the thinnest available."

For the first time, besides the display size, Apple would differentiate phone models by adding a telephoto camera to the iPhone 7 Plus. This would improve zoom and also make Portrait Mode possible. Last but not least, Apple brought a spec bump to all cameras with a 7MP selfie lens and a second-generation sensor for the 12MP main camera.

This was also the model Apple brought a Jet Black finish, which was beautiful but also very successive to scratches. There was also a Matter Black finish as well. In addition, the iPhone 7 was the first smartphone made by Apple to remove the headphone jack. Long live AirPods.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Launch date: September 17, 2017

With this generation, Apple made its best classic design, blending stainless steel and glass. With the A11 Bionic chip, the company opted for two storage options: 64GB or 256GB. This model included wireless charging for the first time. It shared IP67 for water and dust resistance from its predecessor, the iPhone 7.

Launch date: November 3, 2017

To celebrate ten years of the first iPhone, Apple released the iPhone X. With a 5.8-inch OLED display, the company ditched its classic design in favor of an all-screen smartphone. Bigger than a Plus model but with the same dimensions as a regular phone, Apple also introduced the Face ID sensor and new gestures.

Interestingly enough, the dual-camera sensor was similar to the iPhone 8 Plus but vertical instead of horizontal. It was only available in black and white and was priced at $999 – a first for a smartphone.

Launch date: September 21, 2018

In 2018, Apple decided to continue selling three different iPhone models, but this time, they would all have a similar design to the iPhone X. The XR had a 6.1-inch LCD display, while the XS offered 5.8-inch or 6.7-inch OLED screens.

The XR model also only had one 12MP main lens, while the XS option offered dual-sensor cameras that people were already familiar with. The XR offered several colors to choose from, while Apple gave XS users black, white, and gold. All models offered the A12 Bionic chip.

Launch date: September 20, 2019

The Pro era is here. After users incorrectly said the name of the new iPhone models for two years, Apple was back with the numbers approach. This time, the company upgraded the XR successor with a dual-camera lens – although the second lens would be ultra-wide. Also, the iPhone 11 had a glass and aluminum finish in colorful options.

For the Pro models, the company bet on glass and stainless steel. This time, there was a triple system for the cameras, offering telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide lenses. At the time, people mocked the size of the 11 Pro lenses, but little they know how large they would become a few years later.

Launch date: April 24, 2020

With the same design as the iPhone 8, the SE line got a second iteration at a $399 price tag. It offered the A13 Bionic chip, a single wide-angle lens, just like the iPhone XR, and featured the next generation Smart HDR 2 for photos, which was better than the one on the iPhone XS.

Launch date: October 23, 2020

With the iPhone 12, Apple decided the more models it would launch, the better. Using the A14 Bionic chip, Apple models ranged from a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini to a 6.7-inch 12 Pro Max. This generation introduced 5G support, shooting HDR video on Dolby Vision, improvements to all cameras, and OLED panels to all models. This is the generation that introduced MagSafe and MagSafe accessories for the first time.

These models also got a design tweak, as their edges were not rounded anymore, giving a more industrial vibe. In this generation, Apple ditched the 64GB storage version for the Pro models.

Launch date: September 24, 2021

In the second year of the pandemic, Apple bet once again on a mini iPhone model. Even with the A15 Bionic chip improvements, Cinematic Mode function, fast charging, and 5G enhancements, the smaller phone was a failure in sales.

On the other hand, the regular and Pro versions were selling better than ever. With this iPhone, Apple also ditched the 64GB version for the regular model, bringing double the storage for the same price. In addition, Pro users could opt for a version with up to 1TB of storage. This was also the first time

iPhone SE 3

Launch date: March 18, 2022

Known as the iPhone that could turn a billion Android owners into switchers, the SE 3 didn't live for the success Apple expected. With the same design as its predecessor and the iPhone 8, this model offered the A15 Bionic chip, a single main 12MP camera, and 5G support – but not the mmWave 5G.

These changes and a price increase didn't entice customers to buy this phone, especially for its classic but outdated design with Touch ID.

Launch date: September 16, 2022

With the iPhone 14 series, Apple ditched the mini in favor of a Plus version. That said, the company also kept offering the same A15 Bionic chip of the last generation for the regular models, which now come in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays.

Apple brought its first redesign for the iPhone 14 Pro models in years by introducing Dynamic Island. In addition to ProMotion, these models also have the long-awaited Always-On display feature. Another welcomed change was a new 48MP main sensor. While the Pro versions were a success in sales, the regular versions suffered from lower demand due to a few changes.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series

With the latest series of Apple smartphones, the company finally brought the Dynamic Island to all models. The standard versions added a 48MP mains sensor, shot photos in 24MP by default, and switched to USB-C. In addition, this is the first time the color is craved into the glass panel.

For the Pro models, Apple added the A17 Pro chip, the first with a 3nm manufacturing process. The company also ditched stainless steel for titanium, making these devices lighter. With a USB-C 3.1 port, this phone lets you transfer data faster and connect to most accessories with no issue.

The newer iPhones also added the second-generation ultrawide band chip, which is great for locating people and items more precisely. The Pro Max version has an exclusive 5x optical zoom thanks to a tetraprism lens.
